Publisher's Summary
The thing about Thor is, he’s great at swinging that hammer. But he doesn’t settle down.
Harlan Kristiansen may not be good at many things, but he can sure catch a pass. He’s an All-Pro at charming a room, too, and then there’s that Norse God thing. He can even figure out how to tackle a woman and save her from a charging bison.
On skis.
What happens when you drop that game-winning pass, though, and your house is too big, too weird, and too empty? When your dad’s a mean drunk, your mom took off a long time ago and stayed gone, and all your money can’t keep your little sister safe? You fall back on what you know, that’s what. Hey, somebody has to swim in the shallow end of the pool.
Jennifer Cardello is good at lots of things. She knows how to get the most out of the cheapest cuts of meat, how long after the expiration date you can still use any food, and how to be indispensable to her employer. And as for faking an orgasm? She could win an Oscar. But surely a woman who’s been trying to fade into the background for more than half her life so she doesn’t have to hear the whispers, a woman who’s lost her mom, is losing her job, and is sending her baby girl off to college - and trying to figure out how to pay for it - is entitled to one unforgettable night.
In 34 years.
With a great guy she never has to see again.
Until old secrets get dug up, and new ones are born.
After that? It’s anybody’s guess.
Note: Yep, it gets a little steamy in here at times. What can I say? Jennifer likes it that way.

Another great one!
This is another fantastic written by Rosalind James. It is a stand alone, loosely tied to a series. You don't need to read any others before this one. This author does a great job invoking emotion. As always, her characters are multidementional and well developed. The storyline is interesting, with just enough plot twist to keep it going.
I am very picky about narrators, a bad one can kill a good book for me. I love Emma Wilder, I wish she would do all my favorites!
I highly recommend this book!

An Absolute Pleasure
2020 has been a rough year for pretty much everyone and Rosalind James has given readers a rare ray of sunshine with her newest book, Shame the Devil: Portland Devils, Book 3, an uplifting and feel good story about family, bouncing back from adversity and recovery from truly traumatic events. As always, the women in this book are strong and the men have good hearts and integrity. Ms James clearly values not only these characteristics but honesty and the deep value that friends and family bring to one’s life. This book was enjoyable from Page 1 through its ending and I look forward to the next book in this series. I could write more but, honestly, the only other thing to say is, “Buy it, listen to it and enjoy it for yourselves.”
The narration by Emma Wilder brings an added dimension to the book, as well. Her voices are spot on and her reading brings depth, tone and even humor to an already very enjoyable book.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good story and a romance that is far more than just a romance. FYI, there are a few steamy scenes. Four and a half stars.

Great book with fantastic narration
For Jennifer Cardello who became a mom at 16, in a small town, life has been hard. She is single mother who has raised her daughter Dyrma to be a strong, independent young woman. Dyrma is poised to head off to college, Jennifer is facing losing her job, so it is now time for Jennifer to plan her future, putting herself first or at least not last.
Then there is Harlan Kristiansen, football wide receiver for the Portland Devil’s. He has gone through life emotionally distancing himself after being raised in an abusive household. Harlan’s going to have to learn to grow from the past in order to embrace his future.
For those of you who have read the other books in the Portland Devils series, our friends Blake and Dakota are back. Find out how their lives have progressed. How Blake tries to help Jennifer move on in her new life.
As always Rosalind made me cry, laugh, get mad, cry and laugh even more. This is a beautiful book written during challenging times. Her characters make me want to be a better me. She makes me remember why family and friends are so important in our lives.
The narration of Emma Wilder brings Rosalind’s book to life in an amazing way. Emma is such a great narrator I forgot that she was voicing both the female and the male characters. From the very beginning, when Harlan goes up against Owen’s prize bull you are drawn in to this wonderful story. Truly a book worth listening too.

I cried more than once... five stars!
My goodness! What does this book not have?!? This is the story of NFL player Harlan Kristianen and former teen mother Jennifer Cardello. They meet at Yellowstone when Jennifer is on a business trip for her boss Blake Orbison, former Portland Devils QB, and Harland (along with his buddy Owen) are hiding out post-ProBowl and Pre-SuperBowl, especially since their team isn't playing. A crazy encounter involving bison, snowmobiles, Harlan, Jennifer, Owen, and Jennifer's teenager daughter Dyma starts the story rolling, and it is a great ride!
I am a huge romance fan and Rosalind James is one of my favorites. I buy her books in Kindle and Audio format every time. The reason is that her stories are so layered and she really is that good of an author.
I don't want to spoil this story for you, but Harlan and Jennifer's story touches on teen parenting, poverty, domestic violence, sexual assault, depression, self esteem, and imposter syndrome, yet it is a romance novel that is fun and flirty and sexy, too. We see the relationships between the family members and the couple grow and develop and you feel like you really know them. I really enjoyed reading this book and I enjoyed listening to it, too. I think that you will, as well. Five stars!

Top author.
Hey fellow readers,
I don’t like reviews that tell you all about the book, I’d rather judge for myself, so do yourself a favour and listen to this one.
As always this author delivers, as does the narrator.
However It did take me longer than usual to get into the groove of the book.

Frozen Scrotum?? What the Heck!!
Good romance stories are a hard find nowadays. Shame the Devil is a GOOD romance. Well developed characters with a mix of good and bad characteristics. Sprinkled with little pearls of wisdom; that really do apply to everyday reality. A little tragedy to give some grit and tension. A solid seasoning of humor that will have you chuckling and have everyone wondering what is so funny and you have a Rosalind-style story. My eyes are still tearing from the chapter titled "Frozen Scrotum" - sounds bad, but reasonably clean and funny as all get out!

Another great story! A second chance at love
Another winner for the very talented Rosalind James!
Shame the Devil is the 3rd installment of the Portland Devils series, and I am so excited to review this book! A beautifully written story, with scenic backdrops from Portland, OR to a small town in Idaho, a beautiful spa resort in New Mexico, to the plains of North Dakota. This beautiful love story will capture your imagination and the characters will capture your heart.
This story is narrated by Emma Wilder, written by Rosalind James.. This story features a man named Harlan, a Portland Devils wide receiver, who looks like a Viking or a Norse god. His blond hair waves to his shoulders, and he is built like an Olympic champion body builder who is lightning fast. Harlan also owns a movie theater in a small town called White Horse and is known for being a playboy who is anything but serious. Harlan has a seriously sad childhood upbringing and no desire to dig into that part of his life. He's about to have his life shaken up a bit - in more ways than one.
Fiercely independent Jennifer is a single mom with her fledgling daughter about to leave the nest for college. She's about to experience freedom for the first time as a single adult - as she had her daughter when she was very young, in her teens, and has known hardship, loss and challenges her whole life while making something of herself, providing for her daughter, and building a future. What she has never known is success in relationships - the romantic kind, anyway.
Jennifer and Harlan meet in unusual circumstances in the Yellowstone National Park on a vacation, and it seems like fate has put one another in their paths. They are immediately attracted to each other and decide to have a short fling that is only supposed to be a night of amazing adventure and then go their separate ways. Fate had other plans and these two wind up becoming very much wrapped up in each other's worlds. Neither one had any long term plans for a relationship, but somehow that is what might be forged out of a very deep case of like for one another. Jennifer challenges Harlan in ways he never dreamt of -and Harlan surprises Jennifer with his very serious and romantic side. Both have a lot of things to overcome, and a lot of things to learn, but we get to watch their kindling fire relationship unfold into a full-fledged inferno -and you hope to just not get burned sitting there on the edge hoping they make a go of it.
I loved these characters, their maturity, their sense of humor and their energy between each other as they grew closer and realized they were falling in love, and could not just walk away from a fun one-time weekend. The two learn so many things through each other and learn to trust and open up with each other. They each get the rare gift of healing from their past hurts and developing something brand new and beautiful. I love how Rosalind showed how they grew close to each other over time, and developed the relationship, as nothing long-lasting ever really happens overnight.
For the narration, Emma Wilder does a great job with different voices for all the different characters. At times, it is difficult to tell the different female parts apart, but that cannot be helped. There are sometimes awkward pauses of speech in odd places, but this could be fixed with a little editing. This is not extreme in any way and doesn't take anything away from the story telling.
I enjoyed this book very much and I am looking forward to hearing more about Dyma and Owen.

Engaging Listen
Loved this audiobook ! It is a long listen but it never felt tiresome. Really easy to jump in and out of while going for a walk or housework. A great way of passing to add a bit of spice during lockdown. This isn’t just about Jennifer and Harlan’s modern messy love story there is incredible interconnection with the subplot of Dyma (Jennifer daughter) and Owen which really felt almost like a parallel story as it was so well fleshed out. I don’t want to give any spoilers about the story because it would be a shame to miss out on the surprises . While there is drama this story still managed to deliver a fit or two of the giggles. Really is worth the download.
