Publisher's Summary

Shallow Hill is where souls suffer slow and miserable deaths.

When River McAllister escaped from Shallow Hill, she left her innocence behind—and some of her sanity. Now, she's rebuilding her life with her dream man, and life couldn't be better.

Ryan Fitzgerald is everything you'd want in a man. Attractive, rich, an aspiring lawyer, and would do anything to keep River. But that's not the only thing that attracts her. It's his attentiveness and possessiveness, but maybe not so much his temper.

When her relationship takes a dark turn, Ryan's estranged brother, Mako, is the only one who sees it. He knows exactly what Ryan is capable of, and it's not the first time he had to be a knight in shining armor.

River came from Shallow Hill, though. She's never needed saving before. What Mako doesn't see is that River is perfectly capable of taking care of herself.

The only one who should be scared is Ryan....

Heartbreakingly incredible

TW: Pretty much all of them… D V, r @ p e, m u r d e r, i n c e s t, mental emotional and physical @b u s e, m@n1pulation, gaslighting and a whole heap of general a $ $ holiness.

Shallow River was as confronting and heartbreakingly incredible as you’d expect a HD Carlton story to be. At the same time I was taken aback by the extremely difficult and confronting story, I couldn’t put the book down. I’d stay up late to finish just another chapter and just another chapter, then regret my choices the next morning when I couldn't concentrate at work! I felt so much sadness and anger for the characters and the situations they found themselves in. The way this amazing book was written helped me to understand the mental process of not only a D V suff3r3r, but also a p3rp3trat0r. As much as the FMC’s actions and choices irritated me and had me yelling at my device, that’s a testimony to HD’s incredible writing rather than any lack of substance in the character(s).
Narration was exceptional, as always when Jacob and Michelle are at the helm.
I am a hardcore sucker for a good revenge story, so I was fist pumping the air when River finally got hers! The pages upon pages of frustration, sadness and anger I felt for FMC made the revenge she got even sweeter. One of the things I can’t stop thinking about, a book hangover if you will, is how the same systems that are put in place to ‘protect’ the vulnerable, allow m@n1pul@t0rs to continue to @ b u s e and keep v1ct1ms down- both in Shallow Hill and in reality. While the book hangover is real, I don’t think this is a book I will read or listen to again anytime soon- it’s incredible, but it’s a lot.

Brilliant, but wow dark!

So well written, as expected by Carlton. Narration was perfect duet, with each line read by the appropriate voice... Does so much to really get into the story and is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE way to hear an audio book.
There's some incredibly hard parts to listen to, so anyone whose suffered gaslighting and SA (rape, assault, battery, etc) , be warned. More a drama/crime/survival story than a dark romance in the typical sense.
This book kept me enthralled the entire time.

Highly Recommend!

This left me and gave me so many different emotions. The narration was on point and they did an amazing job!
I've been in a book rut and this book helped. I could not put this down and had to finish it as soon as possible!
So glad I got this book!
Make sure to read/listen to trigger warnings.

Disappointed

I wish I had listened to the 1 neg feedback for this book. It was just... meh. The female narration was really bitchy and defensive the whole way through, it was distracting. The only good thing about the story was the narcissist awareness and how difficult it is to leave an abusive partner. But everything still seemed far-fetched and unimaginative at that. I hate leaving bad feedback but felt strongly about this because Haunting Adeline lulled me into a false sense of security that this one would be ok at least.

Loved this Book!

I loved this book. The story was so unexpected- not something I would usually go for.

The story was captivating and had me wanting to understand River, hurt Ryan and love on Mako. I loved the twists and turns.

What I didn’t like was audible’s lack of responsibility to note trigger warnings! So here they are:

Trigger Warning: Shallow River is a dark romance that contains domestic violence, rape, violence, and sexual situations.

I didn’t like this book because of the specific stuff that happened to her, I loved it because the book kept me captivated and on the edge of my seat. Despite all the horrific things that happen, it thought the book was beautifully and respectfully written.

Jacob Morgan is phenomenal! The passion and talent he brings to this book it out of this world! He is definitely the light to this dark book.

Wow

Love H. D. Carlton’s books, not afraid to pull any punches or let the main characters get hurt. It makes them so much more real. The DV situation especially so. The self-doubt, guilt, gaslighting, isolation, love-bombing and the slow build of escalating severity and manipulation. That’s exactly what it feels like. And that’s only part of the story. I love the complexity of the authors storytelling, all the threads woven together.
Plus, the performance of both narrators was excellent.

Not what I expected

I love HD Carlton’s writing. I went into this book completely blind, didn’t read the synopsis, didn’t check the triggers (I knew there’d be some). I found it a compelling account of the depths of a DV relationship. I recognised a lot of parallels in the early stages of the FMCs DV situation to one of my own relationships that I managed to get out of before it got physical. It was almost relieving to see my own internal monologue during that time be reflected in River’s own.

And Jacob Morgan could read the dictionary and I’d still find it erotic. His voice is just 🥵🥵🥵
