Publisher's Summary

The Sunday Times best seller returns with the second book in the PC Lucy Clayburn series - a must for all fans of Happy Valley and M. J. Arlidge.

As a female cop walking the mean streets of Manchester, life can be tough for PC Lucy Clayburn. But when one of the North West's toughest gangsters is your father, things can be particularly difficult.

When Lucy's patch is gripped by a spate of murder-robberies, the police are quick to action. Yet when it transpires that the targets are Manchester's criminal underworld, attitudes change.

Lucy is soon faced with one of the toughest cases of her life - and one which will prove once and for all whether blood really is thicker than water....

Unbelievable!

You have to suspend belief completely if you are going to listen to this book in full. No police force would take on a new recruit without background checks, so Lucy would have had no chance with her father a local 'Mr Big' of crime. She spends most of her time as a relatively new detective constable working alone, going into what are clearly dangerous situations without calling for assistance, manages to dodge salvos from sub-machine guns and wrestle with murderers, and all apparently with no sleep and no food or drink apart from the occasional lager! She is supposed to be fit, but her only exercise seems to be running after villains. And, of course, we have to have the cliche of a slender young woman riding a 900 cc Ducati motorbike - very unimaginative. Having lived on the outskirts of Greater Manchester for years, the amount of crime depicted in this book is absolutely unbelievable - gunmen running through the streets? I don't think so! I am amazed that the author didn't make more effort to make this detective novel more believable. It was also incredibly gory. Not for me: this is the first and last by this author that I shall listen to.

Disappointing

Lucy is not a likeable character. Found the story a little monotonous. Not one of Pail Finch’s best.

Not the best

Became repetitive and a rather dull story line, held together by long winded action sections. Lazy writing style and an over use of 'as such'!

Shadows by Paul Finch is a fantastic book filled with excitement . Well worth a read.

I have ploughed through quite a few of this author's novels but I reckon this is one of his best.

Enjoyable but...

I did enjoy this and it was well read by Chloe Massey, but the action was a tad far fetched, especially in the motorbike chase scene. (No spoiler here!). I will look out for the next in the series.
