Now I have become Death, and my shadow shall consume worlds.

Samantha continues her journey with the Shadow Corps, an elite group of the universe's most deadly warriors. Their journey takes them into dangerous corners of the universe and up against a notorious space pirate and mind-controlling genetically engineered aliens and to the path of the second ancient Guardian of our side of the universe.

Once again Samantha comes out swinging in this action-packed Space Opera with a lite LitRPG angle. With the help of her alien biotech armor, she is able to level up and optimize her skill tree upgrades to bring destruction to evil that lurks in the darkest corners of the universe. Samantha steps up into the role of leader

Sloan has crafted an entertaining and gripping world, and populated it with fascinating characters and deadly villains to keep his heroes occupied. Samantha really comes into her own in this book, and is doing her best to lead her team to victory, but the odds are not in their favor. The question becomes not if they can succeed, but if they can survive. Space pirates and mind controlling aliens are nothing to sneeze at, and she has her hands full trying to keep everyone one alive.

First, I have to say that the cover is eye catching, and makes you wonder what the book is all about. Her biotech armor was certainly the way to go, it is flashy and gorgeous. Take away all the words and it would make one heck of a poster. I cannot say how much I appreciate that it isn't one of those computer morphed photos with a weird background. All I can say is that it makes me want to read the book, and so it does its job well.

Once more, Tess Irondale's narration is simply superb. She vocally embodies Sam, and her rendition of Dex is outstanding, and her portrayal of Ferder is perfection. She manages to aurally manipulate the characters in such slight ways that you may not catch all of her nuances. I put her right with Emily Beresford and Andrea Parsanau as a narrator. She is so excellent to listen to that you will be captivated by her voice.

The writing is the same, there is character growth, plot development, and a few twists and turns that will leave you out of breath. I often found myself wondering what was coming next, and was always happy with the way things unfolded (maybe not for the characters, but more for the story line). Sloan certainly knows how to write. I love the direction this series is taking and can't wait for the next book! Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and honestly, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Easily forgetable book.

This is a very simplistic story with no real character development. The MC to me was very annoying and not really likable. A lot of things in the story just don't make sense and I can never get past the fact that they chose this 16 year old girl as their leader who only had a few years fighting experience when her team obviously has much much more. Just doesn't make sense.
The ream is supposed to be some "covert ops" team but don't do any missions where they are covert. And when they do finally have one they're all just bantering and having meaningless conversations when they should "covert" and focusing on the mission. Lots and lots of annoying meaningless banter through the whole book.
The narration is aweful as all the characters sound the exact same. Maybe get at least one other voice actor in there to help out.
This book was free and so I listened to the second one hoping it would be better. Spoiler alert is most definitely is not. If I had to pay for this book I would be asking for my money back. Two stars was generous.

everyone failed this author (tell him the truth)

There is so much wrong with this series. I'd hate to spend more time writing a review than the author spent writing content... spoiled rotten manly princess of a main character the universe owes. 1 clique after the other. free woke BS. Someone should have proof read this series before going to publication. Men are the weaker sex, women shouldn't show emotion even though there's nothing wrong with emotions. non sex creatures are the best. "the seer saw?" The author stacked the universe in favor of the main character. Weak character development... I'm not saying writing is easy. I'm saying leave it to the professionals IE the ones who take it seriously. Just because you get paid to write doesn't make you a professional. I feel as if I was proof reading a document PhDs would red marker every sentence. nothing sat right with this whole production make the author redo it. good thing it was free. what can be said? it's not for grown-ups? why would you expose kids to crap writing. and the preteen preaching to the universe about modesty? this feels like woke gender type indoctrination? there are 100s of great authors out there. I'm going to carve the name Justin sloan in the dash of my truck and into my stainless steel refrigerator and bathroom mirror so I don't forget and accidentally get another one of his books. watch the series Gotham and you'll see women that are "badass" because they are. watch the series super girl and you'll see women who are bad ass because they say they are and then need a man to save them. you'll see the difference I'm talking about. this series is pandering to someone I don't know who. the narrator did the best they could, but needs to stick to fewer than 3 characters. it gets tough separating who's who in the overall grand scheme of things.

Gave it a shot

I gave the series a chance up until halfway through book two. Just couldn't get past the main character.

Why do aliens suddenly totally get American slang?

I just felt some of the conversations between the characters were totally unrealistic and I know that’s sort of a paradox because it’s A Work of fiction. But otherwise I enjoyed the book oh and I almost forgot the writer seems to really struggle with coming up with original names I kind of feel like they’re just raping a lot of Greek and Roman mythology I feel the writer based on other merits could standalone without cannibalizing mythology

Review

I generally like the book. One thing that keeps irritating me is the fact Dex doesn't have a gender and Sam was using 'it' for a while... while Dex stated they don't care which pronouns are used the crew still use masculine pronouns when referring to Dex... Author missed a great opportunity to use they/them pronouns.

Also, the main character reads as Asexual Demi-romantic but I'm afraid that this isn't the case and the author is going to pair her up with someone and have a s*xual awakening for her. 😑

Other than that I'm enjoying the story even if it is a bit predictable.

Great read.

Love where the story is headed. The characters and different races are great. Looking forward to book 3.
