About this listen
Retire early from your nine-to-five and reach financial freedom with the actionable advice in this personal finance best-seller—now completely revised with new content from the author!
Building wealth is always possible, even while working full-time, earning a median income, and paying off debt. By layering philosophy with practical knowledge, Set for Life gives people in their 20s and 30s an action plan they need to conquer their financial goals early in life. With more than 130,000 first-edition copies sold, this anniversary edition gets a refresh with new content, updated numbers, and even more valuable tips and tricks learned over the last five years.
Scott Trench—real estate investor, co-host of the BiggerPockets Money Podcast, and CEO of BiggerPockets—demonstrates how to accumulate a lifetime of wealth over a short period of time. Even starting with zero savings, you can go from a five-figure income to six figures, from an active job to passive income, then finally to the ultimate goal of financial independence.
Set yourself up for life as early as possible, and enjoy life on your terms!
Inside this book, you’ll learn how to:
- Save more income (50+ percent of it) while still having fun
- Double or triple your income in 3–5 years
- Track your financial progress in order to achieve the greatest results
- Build frugal and efficient habits to make the most of your lifestyle
- Secure “real” assets and avoid ”false” ones that destroy wealth
- Use real estate and stock investing to generate passive income
- And much more!

- targeted specifically at young adults just starting their FI journey
- who are based in the USA
- and wish to passionately pursue FI.
However, many of the principles are applicable to older listeners, those living outside of the USA, and those who may not be in quite as much of a rush to achieve FI.
The messages are delivered with absolute conviction, sometimes in a somewhat school teacher like manner...this can be grating, particularly in some areas where I found myself at least partially disagreeing with the author. For example, I found myself disagreeing with the author's aversion to retirement accounts. His main argument being that you need to focus on usable investing money now if you are seeking early retirement and not lock the money away for decades. He did admit to several circumstances where retirement accounts do make sense though I suspect this strong messaging may lead some people to make poor decisions.
The structure of the book is good. However, some of the arguments were well presented with good story telling and analogies while some were a bit superficial...almost like the author was in a rush to complete the manuscript.
Overall, well worth the read and I took away a lot of sound pointers.
Some solid wisdom, a bit preachy

While obviously the tactics described within would work equally as well for the middle of the rung American woman, the authors poignant use of gendered language makes a strong case that this is for our Average Joe.
General tips and tricks are in line with other FI or FIRE compilations so unless you’re a middle of the rung American man you won’t find anything new here; otherwise, if you are an Average Joe, then Set For Life is likely a well formed playbook you can put to use at delivering your own Hail Mary touchdown in your financial SuperBowl of life!
For the middle class American man
