About this listen

Homeless and jobless, Fenn Todd has nearly run out of hope. All he has left are his longing for horses and the strength of his own two hands. But when he's cheated into accepting a very ugly sackcloth horse, he's catapulted into a world of magic, politics, and desire.

Fenn's invited to stay at the black tower, home of the most terrifying man in the realm: Morgrim, the court sorcerer. Morgrim has a reputation as a scheming villain, but he seems surprisingly charming—and sexy—and Fenn falls hard for him.

However, nothing is as it seems, and everyone at the tower is lying about something. Beset by evil hexes, violent political intrigue, and a horse that eats eiderdowns, Fenn must make the hardest choices of his life.

Can a plain man like Fenn ever find true love with a scheming sorcerer?

Once a highly competent horse groomer, now a homeless drifter, Fenn Todd is desperate. He can’t believe the offer being made: a meal and a clapped-out horse for a day’s hard labour. Thus begins Fenn’s entanglement with magic, Morgrim, the reviled court sorcerer, and the safety of the realm. Despite Fenn’s lowly circumstances, Morgrim recognises something in Fenn that no one else he meets seems to have: a good heart, an honest tongue, and wild untapped magic.

This charming high-fantasy romance catapulted itself to one of my favourite stories of all time. I have to confess I felt teary during some of the scenes with the worple horse, you could feel the goodness in Fenn and his unwavering affection for the raggedy animal and how that love was returned by the ridiculous horse. Fenn’s love interest, Morgrim, is harder to love—he keeps things from Fenn and tries to manipulate him for the good of the kingdom—but I could understand that he was desperate and doing what he thought was right. Except for the BDSM, this had the feel of TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea and like that book, I’m not sure this needed such strong sex scenes. They didn’t offend me but I didn’t feel they added anything so I just sort of glazed over until they passed. 🎧 American voice-acting legend Joel Leslie made good use of his well-developed British accents and others, to give another outstanding performance on the audiobook. I loved his choice of a Northerner regional accent for Fenn, it suited the character perfectly!

One of my all-time favourite fantasy / romances!

If anything a little bit more depth and two points of views would have made it even better. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely listen to it again.

Totally enjoyed it!

Interesting story with surprising plot twists and an unconventional, heart melting romance. What's wrong with a little soft BDSM when it's done with affection.

Great Story
