Horváths erster Roman spielt im Spätaugust 1928 in München. Agnes Pollinger, eine arbeitslose Näherin aus Regensburg, wohnt bei ihrer Tante in der Schellingstraße. Der Untermieter Herr Kastner unterhält ein florierendes Geschäft mit pornografischen Bildern und stellt Agnes nach.Agnes hat häufig Affären mit anderen Männern, die jedoch selten romantisch verlaufen. Da begegnet sie dem arbeitslosen, österreichischen Kellner Eugen Reithofer. Unter einer Ulme auf dem Oberwiesenfeld kommen sich beide näher. Das Treffen, welches sie für den nächsten Tag ausmachen, wird von Agnes nicht eingehalten. Agnes lässt sich stattdessen von Herrn Kastner als Aktmodell an einen exzentrischen Maler vermitteln, der mit "besseren Kreisen" Umgang pflegt. So lernt Agnes den erfolgreichen Eishockeyspieler Harry kennen, welcher sogar ein eigenes Cabriolet besitzt.
Thomas Kamper stammt aus Wien und ist Schauspieler und Regisseur. Er ist Mitglied im Ensemble des Wiener Volkstheaters. Er spielte unter anderem am Wiener Burgtheater, Theater der Jugend, Theater Gruppe 80 und bei den Salzburger Festspielen.
