Shy, gay and closeted, Olly Järvinen’s first experience of pro ice hockey was all bad when his teammates found out. Legal threats and a transfer kept things quiet but Olly is paranoid about anyone on his new team finding out and it’s eating him from the inside. Benji Bryzinski is a rooky with a difficult upbringing but he’s proud of having fought his way onto the team. He’s big, warm and friendly and he takes the older, uncertain Olly under his wing. Soon the two are best buds but Olly has to watch his feelings, because he knows the straight Benji would hate him if he ever found out Olly’s secret.

I really loved this slowburn / bi-awakening / sports romance but, phew, was it angsty in places! While Benji had to contend with his half-sister’s marriage to one of the worst-behaved hockey players in the league, at least he as good at remaining chill and looking after himself. Olly, on the other hand, was really suffering from PTSD or something close and it made him physically and mentally unwell at times. I really enjoyed the writing and the dialogue and I thought the two main characters were really well sketched out. My only irk was just how S…L...O...W the slowburn was and how long it took for the guys to communicate. I’m definitely ready for more from this author! 🎧 Simon Dornet as Olly and Lace West as Benji were both good on the audio, although I didn’t see the need for two narrators when the narrative was in the third person.
