Surely, this is meant to be a children's book! I found the whole thing seriously annoying. Perhaps I'm losing my sense of humour, but I can't believe anyone (except perhaps a child) would take this book seriously. If you're writing a book for children, then please make it clear who the intended audience is.
I must say, I did enjoy McCall Smith's first book - and even two or three after that perhaps. But after that, I was totally disengaged. He seemed to be just trotting out formulaic blurbs that failed to entertain (me).
I've got no more to say.
