Publisher's Summary

The acclaimed best-selling classic of Holocaust literature, winner of the Booker Prize and the inspiration for the classic film Schindler's List

In the shadow of Auschwitz, a flamboyant German industrialist grew into a living legend to the Jews of Cracow. He was a womaniser, a heavy drinker and a bon viveur, but to them he became a saviour.

A stunning novel based on the extraordinary true story of German war profiteer and factory director Oskar Schindler, who came to save more Jews from the gas chambers than any other single person during World War II.

In this milestone of Holocaust literature, Thomas Keneally, author of Daughter of Mars, uses the actual testimony of the Schindlerjuden - Schindler’s Jews - to brilliantly portray the courage and cunning of a good man in the midst of unspeakable evil.

After a while I forgot it was an Aussie

What a book. Powerful story powerfully told. Oskar Schindler, business man, drinker, pleaser of men and seducer of women. Quick thinking gambler. A Player but never a sycophant. He found it easy to do what he could. So did more, and saved more. people. He was the right man for that job. The job of greasing wheels with alcohol and getting people to look the other way.
He could not stop it all but he stopped more than he could.
The book takes you along with him. There are emotional highs and moments of deep sadness at the way people can treat other people for a difference of opinion - or for having no real opinion at all. I will not forget this book.

An Important Read

Everyone should read this book and see the movie. No holds barred and no exaggerations as there shouldn't be for such a huge crime against humanity.

One thing about the titles in Audible: They do not match the number stated by the narrator. Not the first time I have noticed this on Audible.

A must listen.

If you have seen the movie but want to know the whole story this is a must. Oscar and his Schindler Juden incredible story at times brought tears to my cheeks. A story of survival and the inner good of a flawed man fighting against overpowering evil.

Not for me

I should have known before I bought it. It’s too tragic for me to attempt to make my way through. I desperately want to know the story, but I just can’t listen to it. Not the books fault of course…

An outstanding monument

This superlative documentary novel by Australian writer Thomas Kenneally, beautifully read by distinguished Australian actor Humphrey Bower, stands as a fitting monument to a heroic, if deeply flawed, human being who, at considerable personal risk and expense, saved more than a thousand Jews from the ravenous maw of the holocaust. It also provided the raw material for Stephen Spielberg film Schindler's List, which many will know. Not having seen that movie, I found this story marvelously thought-provoking, as well as terrifying and heartbreaking.

Schindlers Ark

The book, in this case, had just as much, if not more, feelings than the movie. I truly loved, hated, cried, laughed and felt lost, confusion, dispare .... how could this happen
