About this listen

During the Holocaust at the German concentration camp near Plaszow, thousands of Jews lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis. More than a thousand others were spared thanks to a womanizing, heavy-drinking, German-Catholic industrialist and Nazi Party member named Oskar Schindler. One of the most remarkable narratives of the Holocaust, Schindler's List masterfully recreates the daring exploits of Schindler, who used his enormous fortune to build a factory near the concentration camp and his influence to save the lives of more than 1,300 Jews. It is an absorbing, suspenseful, and moving account of Schindler's legacy of life.©1993 Serpentine Publishing Co. PTY LTD. Tom Keneally has truly written a masterpiece. In the main it is an unforgettable portrait of Oscar Schindler. Yet, the story uniquely presents scenes of essential viewing for those of us who live in the world that stood witness to the Holocaust. Keneally's abilities for historical fiction are stunning, painting a hard but not indulgent canvass of events difficult to comprehend. The evils of the concentration camps, and the hope bought by Schindler -- himself not flawless -- is the kind of story that even confounds the reader, and at many turns inclines one to consider one's own understanding of human nature and the solution to the evil unearthed in the human heart.
