Publisher's Summary

In 1983 four self-described 'knuckleheads' burst out of the neo-punk rock scene in L.A. with their own unique brand of cosmic hard-core mayhem funk. Over 20 years later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, against all the odds, have become one of the most successful bands in the world. Though the band has gone through many incarnations, Anthony Kiedis, the group's lyricist and dynamic lead singer, has been there for the whole rollercoastar ride.

Scar Tissue far transcends the typical rock biography, because Anthony Kiedis is anything but a typical rock star. It is instead a searingly honest memoir - a compelling story of dedication and debauchery, of intrigue and integrity, of recklessness and redemption. It is a story that could only have come out of Hollywood.

Riveting

I read this when it first came out over a decade ago and was blown away by the life of Kiedis - particularly his drug addiction which dominates the story. Being a huge RHCP fan I was eager to learn more of the front man and I am so glad I did. I decided to listen to the story with Audible recently and was again engrossed in the book. I was unsure if Strong was the best person to read the book as it would have been great to hear it read by Kiedis. He did grow on me although at times did not seem to convey the story compellingly and sounding very much removed from the lifestyle of the troubled singer. In all, it is a great book and I would read or listen to it again.

Second time reading it and still fascinating.

This book gives an understanding of a drug obsessed, sex obsessed musician but more so the understanding of how he got there and why he made the decisions he did. It's great to get an understanding of a very creative human from such a different walk of life to most people.

Probably more enjoyable for fans

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I wanted some car-crash style rock n roll benders, and got them (in spades) but it felt a little repetitive by the end.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

It would benefit form more description and more anecdotes, although hiding alone in a motel room getting high probably doesnt lead to great stories.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The scenes around the release of Blood Sugar Sex Magic were best, as that was when they were huge and relevant.

Did Scar Tissue inspire you to do anything?

This book inspired me not to get a raging poly drug habit.

Any additional comments?

If you are a big fan of the band, or Anthony, the long list of benders and partners may be more engaging.

A must read!!

Wow this story had me mesmerized from beginning to end. It's raw, gritty and sometimes I felt like banging my head against the wall!! I could not get enough of it. Also Rider Strong was amazing as the narrator. Couldn't recommend enough 👌

Interesting Insight

Where does Scar Tissue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is toward the top of my library in terms of quality. It is an interesting account, it's a very long book that deals in depth with each stage of the band's progression, with a solid delivery by the narrator. I'm not the hugest fan of the band, but I lived through their times and it's a really interesting account of that. I admire the author's candid account, it doesn't seem like he held much back in the writing of this memoir.

Brilliant

What an incredible story!. And not only that Anthony is still alive. I've heard the Chilli Peppers commercial songs, but never been a mad huge fan. After hearing this I want to go out now and listen to every album as I feel I now have a small understanding of where it all comes from.
This warts and all story gives a great education on drugs and drug abuse and how the minds that are attached to these abused bodies work. I loved every minute, was gutted every time you lost the battle and cheered when you could stay sober. I had to listen to the last 3 hours in one hit - I couldn't turn off. To Anthony - Thank you for sharing so much.
To Rider - So very well read.

Could only be a hollywood life

Where does Scar Tissue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Up near the top for sure. The narrator is fantastic & the book has got a great mix of highs, lows, funny bits, sad bits and so on that make it really easy to keep listening.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the stories behind the music. What was going on in their lives when they were doing which shows. Anthony Keidis very unconventional childhood is interesting, as is his continued functioning as a musician to such a high level, whilst leading such a dysfunctional long time drug interest!

Have you listened to any of Rider Strong’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never, but this one was fantastic!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

No idea, but I would love them to make a film!

Good story, well read

I found the story behind the Red Hot Chilli Peppers facinating and the book was very well read. The voice fit perfectly. Full marks.
