About this listen

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult comes a compelling and “multilayered tale of small-town intrigue” (Glamour) about a prep schoolteacher accused of rape by a group of young girls, the woman who stands by him, and the repercussions of the case in a New England town where the past is only a heartbeat away.

Love can redeem a man...but secrets and lies can condemn him.

A handsome stranger comes to the sleepy New England town of Salem Falls in hopes of burying his past. Once a prep schoolteacher, Jack St. Bride was destroyed when a student’s crush sparked a powder keg of accusation. Now, washing dishes for Addie Peabody at the Do-Or-Diner, he slips quietly into his new routine, and Addie finds this unassuming man fitting easily inside her heart.

But amid the rustic calm of Salem Falls, a quartet of teenage girls harbor dark secrets—and they maliciously launch a modern-day witch hunt. Now, Jack is forced once again to proclaim his innocence: to a town searching for answers, to a justice system where truth becomes a slippery concept written in shades of gray, and to the woman who has come to love him in this unputdownable novel that will keep you “constantly guessing” (The Dallas Morning News) until the very last page.

Engaging enthralling plot. Brilliant parallels with the Salem witch hunt. The final denouement is shocking and yet recognisable

Stunning

I loved it, I wish there was a sequel! There was a few bits that alluded to Jillys father being her abuser, but not sure

Immediately gripping

I had read this in paperback years ago but wasn't disappointed to listen to it.
Great characters, great story, great narration.
You can't go wrong.

First book I've listened to on Audible. I have read a lot of Jodi Picoult books and this is just as good. easy voice to listen to and great story line

Great Read

Huge fan of Jodi Picoult but this is not my favourite. It’s still good but not her usual brilliance. Was a little distracted by the sipping and swallowing of the actress, who otherwise did a good job.

Good - not great

Excellent and scary storyline….. and the helplessness of the innocent! Makes you want to avoid contact just in case you end up on the wrong side of the line. Narration was excellent considering all the voices to act out. Just confirmed to me how blind parental love can be, and how no one person can see the overall view of any situation where two or more people are connected. Who would ever want to be a male teacher in a girls school for heavens sake!!

Attack is far easier than defense

Was very surprised at this book. Thought about not listening to it after the second chapter but persisted just in case then it came and went in waves. Very predictable. The performance was overall good only you could hear the reader stopping to swallow and taking breathing breaks which were distracting and normally does not happen in other audio books.
I love Jodie books but not this one! Not a fan at all !

Disappointed
