Publisher's Summary

Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stands serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence is damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity, and the means to administer the fatal poison.

Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, one man still presumes Elinor is innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot, who is all that stands between Elinor and the gallows.

Really good work

I loved the story, I had trouble hearing the narrator. Great performance though. I recommend

David Suchet is an audio magician

You already know that no-one is Poirot like Suchet. But it’s so delightful listening to his effortless characterisation of every part - right up to the point where you entirely forget that he’s doing anything at all and just get swept up in the story.

Enjoyable but implausible

A classic Christie, though the plot is a little weak. I enjoyed the characters and papa Poirot. A word of advice to David Suchet; SPEAK UP!! I understand that murmuring may convey some dramatic flourish. But it also makes the book impossible to hear properly.

Brilliantly told

Would you listen to Sad Cypress again? Why?

Yes and I already have. Well told narrative, with excellent character profiling. A great tale by Agatha Christie.

A worthwhile listen

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Worth listening for its story and characters.

Would you be willing to try another book from Agatha Christie? Why or why not?

I'm keen to read more Christie for the setting, mystery, and characters.

Have you listened to any of David Suchet’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

David Suchet is excellent - I'm choosing Christie novels based on his brilliant performances! This one did not disappoint.

Brilliant

It was classical hercule
It met my expectation however I still believe that Hugh Fraser should narrate the books. Suchet was good but sometimes distracting.

Hmmm

David Suchet is a surprisingly bad narrator. He is a wonderful Poirot, or course, but his voice for other characters is very poor, stilted, accents weak. Not a patch on Hugh Fraser's narration.

Good story, poor performance.

What did you like best about Sad Cypress? What did you like least?

I enjoyed the story a lot more than I thought. However, the poor quality of narration really spoiled it for me, especially with it being David Suchet whom I admire as an actor.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sad Cypress?

When the cunning of the murderer was revealed.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No. I liked the story but not that much.

Any additional comments?

I do wonder if the problem was with the narrator or a problem with the audio recording itself.

Irritating narrator

Excellent story but David Suchet is thoroughly irritating - the last word of a sentence disappears and the rhythm of sentences is idiosyncratic. The use of falsetto is not much of a pleasure, either.

Poor Suchet

The story is not one of Agatha Christie's best but it's not helped by David Suchet's abysmal performance. I simply cannot understand how such an experienced actor can speak so quietly at times when recording, that you simply cannot hear what is being said! This is a common fault with his 'Audible' readings. Hugh Fraser is so much better. The other Christie readers; Stephanie Cole, Joan Hickson and Emilia Fox are vastly superior to Suchet too.

Story good enough but narration inaudible in parts

Urgh, usually love Suchet as narrator, but this was way below usual standard. His voice for Eleonor was so grating, and there were parts that I had to keep rewinding as he was speaking so quietly. The story was ok, but I honestly couldn't wait to get to the end because of the sound quality/narration.

Not the best reading

David Suchet - an actor whom I generally revere - does not do the greatest job on narrating this story. His changes of voice - most of all for a major protagonist, Eleanor - make the story almost impossible to listen to without constantly adjusting the volume. Eleanor speaks in mousy, sotto voce tones which are almost inaudible for much of the time, whereas most of the other characters speak at normal volume. There are also sudden changes of volume, for dramatic effect, within any given character's utterances. Another strange feature is the dropping of final consonants in many words, whether by the narrator or because of the recording acoustics. A great shame, as it's a very good story. I can only wish that the reading of this one had been entrusted to the magnificent Hugh Fraser, who always manages to avoid such pitfalls.

Good story badly read

Unfortunately David Suchet spoils a decent story with another dreadful reading. He persistently adopts awful nasal accents which are unbearable.

My new favourite Christie!

I really thoroughly enjoyed this Christie book with the consistently fantastic David Suchet narrating - sometimes a Christie can be a bit hit and miss but I found this one fascinating and entertaining! Highly recommend for those who love the comfort of Poirot and Mr Suchet.
