Publisher's Summary

To the outside world, they look like American royalty, giving to charities, feeding the homeless, and rebuilding the city. But behind closed doors is a constant battle for dominance between two bosses, cultures, and hearts. Ruthless People is a romantic crime fiction set in modern day Chicago and follows the life and marriage of Melody Giovanni and Liam Callahan - rivals by blood and leaders through fear. Their marriage was arranged by their fathers in hopes to end years of bloodshed between the Irish and the Italians. Liam believes he's getting a simple-minded wife, one he can control, one who bends to his every need...the complete opposite of Melody. She knows exactly what type of man he is and would rather die than give up the power she has spent her life building. The mafia of the past has evolved, and with rival bosses gunning for them, Melody and Liam will have to learn to work as one to take down those who stand in their way.

Fantastic!

I have always loved a good mafia romance, but throw a kick ass woman and you definitely have my attention.
Meland Liam story gripped me from the first chapter. all the characters came alive for me and the plot had me coming back for more. The narrator was fantastic. this is not something that happens a lot.. that being said I would have preferred a woman to Narrate Melodies part, but still it was fantastic. wow I seem to be using that word a lot. but I truly did enjoy it!

the second book was a one click for me and no thought included. it was that easy of a choice.

the writer had me experiencing the highs and their Lows. The last chapter had me wanting to turn to the next book straight away.

This book was a five star for me and I highly recommend it. grab it today!

A mafia Bonnie and Clyde to die for.

Where does Ruthless People rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very high. The narrator pulls of an incredible range of characters and the writing is excellent. I got totally wrapped up in the story and invested in the characters... which, considering they are all pretty awful people, is incredible. The book is dark, brutal but brilliant... and the narration brings out the dry humor very well.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ruthless People?

No spoilers but there was a really amazing section where one of the characters that seems cold as ice has a real crisis. It's a major turning point for the main relationship and I thought it was handled really well.

What does Joel Froomkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He certainly made me smile... Melody and Liam have a really dry, wicked wit and he pulls it off really well. The heroine is kind of Sigourney Weaver meets Anjelina Jolie and I was kind of shocked how convincing it was. He handles that and the Irish and Italian characters believably - and considering how many different leading characters he had to pull off... I totally went along for the ride.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Meet Melody and Liam. Now run for your life.

Brutal and Brilliant

This book is freaking awesome. The lead characters, Melody and Liam are sexy, savage and impossible not to love and loathe. McAvoy has created this huge cast of characters that each get a chance to take the narrator's helm... It should feel like a mess - but instead it gives an incredible rich tapestry and nuance to the work. It's a huge mafia romance saga - but it's the psychological interplay between the two leads and their desire for power playing against their passion for each other that keeps you totally engaged. The narration is pretty amazing... For a male performer to be able to create a huge arrange of male as well as female characters that aren't silly or cartoony was really impressive. I can't wait to read more in the series. It's sexy and sinful as hell.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith goes Tarantino

What did you love best about Ruthless People?

The whole book knocked my socks off. I really didn't know what to expect since I'm not much of a fan of the Mafia genre. But this was AWESOME. Imagine Mr. and Mrs. Smith meets the Sopranos. The whole story revolves around an young female Italian mafia boss tied in an arranged marriage to an Irish playboy mob leader. The characters are fantastic... the dialogue is clever, brutal and I was totally addicted. This has an HBO series written all over it. Fair warning - the language is strong (the f*** word is everywhere - but it suits these characters) and the sex is steamy.

What did you like best about this story?

Melody - she's a fabulous bitch that you can't help but love. The writer crafts the book from multiple character POV which is really interesting and helps you gain a deeper perspective on the characters you even thought you didn't like very much.

What does Joel Froomkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Kind of an amazing performance. I was really impressed with the way he was able to embody Liam and handle all the accents, but he also nailed Melody. Considering it's a guy who has to narrate as a female through huge sections, he did a killer job.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

They're a match made in Hell.

Any additional comments?

Everyone I know that started this series totally couldn't wait to read the next book. If you liked Kill Bill or Guy Ritchie movies... go for it.

Guilty Pleasure!

Would you consider the audio edition of Ruthless People to be better than the print version?

Absolutely! Joel made the story come ALIVE!

What about Joel Froomkin’s performance did you like?

Joel absolutely nailed the accents. His range is amazing!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Just when I began to have sympathy for Melody, I ended up hating her again. She was so over-the-top evil. Liam was HOT. Who doesn't love a sexy Irish crime boss with a heart of gold??

Any additional comments?

This story was such a fun escape from daily life. I felt propelled into another world and Joel Froomkin made it all possible. Fantastic job all-around!

I love stories with a strong woman

This woman was absolutely a boss chick. She is all about business and she doesn't put up with anyone's nonsense. I could not put this book down. The way it was written draws you in!

Beyond awesome

I could not even go to sleep for not wanting to put it down. I haven't felt like this since Harry Potter 7. It's my best mafia story blended with the strong female type and romance. It had everything.

No words

Any additional comments?

Major kudos to the narrator!! He was able to voice many different accents and sexes and make them all unique and distinct. Bravo! The subject matter was distasteful though (very) and the storyline was too over the top to be believed.

Melody and Liam were ruthless but to a cartoonish level. There were some interesting family story lines but not enough to redeem them or their actions. The narrator made it an interesting listen, but just barely.

THIS NARRATOR IS WHY I’M A SATED AUDIBLE MEMBER

When I first saw this dark Mafia romance I thought it sounded good.. but now, after just finishing the last book in this series, good is such a weak insignificant word to describe such an epic awesome listen. Great doesn’t cover it either.. because this dark, often violent, rollercoaster romance between two characters whose moral compasses had been broken long ago, was far better than great too. Their fast-paced journey together was nothing short of spectacular inspired storytelling, their rise to the top was bloody and brutal.. and I loved every cringe-worthy and sighworthy minute of it. Their highs, lows and everything in-between was twisted, breathtaking and beautiful, the pulse-pounding hold your breath action was riveting and the shocking twists, the gut-wrenching turns and the heart-stopping tragedies throughout this whole series left me in stunned awe of this author’s abilities. And Melody and Liam’s devotion and undying love for each other was writing at its very best.. because you can FEEL the passion between them, you can almost touch their chemistry and their sexy times nearly melted my headphones.

And they couldn’t of picked a more skilful narrator to bring it all to life because young and old, male and female, nationality and state.. this actor had it covered and delivered a faultless performance. Each and every scene effortlessly played out in my mind thanks to Joel Froomkin’s talented vocal abilities which brought me into each scene where I mentally clapped, jeered, swooned, swayed, stumbled and staggered. I drooled, booed, screamed, squirmed, boiled, bled and fumed. I fanned myself, bit my nails, laughed, cried and hung on to each chapter as it told of an Italian-Irish alliance that started out as an arranged marriage which lust and like-minds turned into soul-to-soul love that went through Hell, that took its blows and casualties.. and dished them out too.. and finally endedured it all because of love. The witty smooth dialogue, light-hearted humor, the edge-of-your-seat action, the nail-biting drama, the sweet and the savory, the dark and the light, the knocks and the hits and the pain and the pleasure may have been J. J. McAvoy’s words but Joel was the magician who gave them a heartbeat.

Worth a credit? This journey is the best I’ve ever listened to, it’s told mainly from the Melody and Liam’s POV’s who were strong alpha characters but there were multiple POV from family members too which brought everyone’s feelings to the forefront making it an all inclusive under one roof Callahan/Giovanni dynasty and the action-packed drama never stopped.. so oh boy YES it’s very creditworthy. Four books in the Ruthless People series.. four very different chapters in their lives.. four credits used.. and four times I mentally stood clapping this author’s brilliance, the narrator’s endless abilities and shouted “more.. more.. more..!”.

WHOA NOT your typical romance

Well damn! I was NOT prepared for any of it! Nothing predictable! No fillers! Just 1 shock after the next!

I only had 1 issue and that was narration. This male narrator should NEVER EVER EVER do female voices! EVER!
