About this listen

Roused by a single drop of blood, Rosie Daniels wakes up to the chilling realisation that her husband is going to kill her. And she takes flight - with his credit card.

Alone in a strange city, Rosie begins to build a new life: she meets Bill Steiner and she finds an odd junk shop painting, Rose Madder, which strangely seems to want her as much as she wants it.

But it's hard for Rosie not to keep looking over her shoulder. Rose-maddened and on the rampage, Norman is a corrupt cop with a dog's instinct for tracking people. And he's getting close. Rosie can feel how close he is getting....

A brilliant, dark-hued fable of gender wars, a haunting love story, and a hold-your-breath triumph of suspense, Rose Madder is Stephen King at his electrifying best.

Great reading by Blair Brown, passable reading by Stephen King, his genius is in the writing, not in the performance. But the music is just awful, jarring and out of place, drowns out the voices in some places. Definitely worth persevering through, but please, someone, give us a version without the music!

Great reading, terrible music

At some points, the purposely grating music is louder than the narration. It's really awful.

story is great, could have ended a chapter earlier and lost nothing.

God awful music, pretty good story

Why did they put that horrific music?? Over the top of the narrator’s reading?? I was constantly grabbing my phone to turn the volume down.

the best duo I've heard. very entertaining. the viscous Norman was an evil guy... and the painting with an ozimandius feel...

A deeply touching, often terrifying, account of a woman's struggle to find herself in a cruel but beautiful world.

Enjoyed this book but found music annoying.
Nice to have both Male and female voices used to portray characters. Reccomend even with weird music.

Worth a listen

Well done Mr King.
I was pulled into the story straight from the beginning.
Your imagination is just out of this world.
Very highly recommended

it was a great story, well written and well read by both Blair Brown and Stephen King, but the musical screeching interludes are not great - some were quite high-pitched and drilled into my head (listening while driving a truck, so have it turned up to hear the quiet parts and then screeeeeeeeeeeech! it was the only let down)

enjoyed the story

This book cleverly blends reality and an alternate world, with the two coming together dramatically. It’s an interesting approach which is also used in Fairy Tale. As usual, King creates characters who seem so real and whose experiences are absolutely credible - it’s a truly immersive book. I loved hearing King narrate part of the book but found the female narrator a bit nasal for my taste.

Early model for Fairy Tale?
