Rogue Forces is the explosive first insiders’ story of how some of Australia’s revered SAS soldiers crossed the line in Afghanistan, descending from elite warriors to unlawful killers.

Mark Willacy, who won a Gold Walkley for exposing SAS war crimes, has penetrated the SAS code of silence to reveal one of the darkest chapters in our country’s military history.

Willacy’s devastating award-winning Four Corners program, Killing Fields, captured on film for the first time a war crime perpetrated by an Australian: the killing of a terrified, unarmed Afghan man in a field by an SAS soldier. It caused shockwaves around the world and resulted in an Australian Federal Police war crimes investigation. It also sparked a new line of investigation by the Brereton inquiry, the independent Australian Defence Force inquiry into war crimes in Afghanistan. It was a game changer.

But for Willacy, it was just the beginning of a much bigger story. More SAS soldiers came forward with undeniable evidence and eyewitness testimony of other unlawful killings, and exposed a culture of brutality and impunity.

Rogue Forces takes you out on the patrols where the killings happened. The result is a gripping character-driven story that embeds you on the front line in the thick of the action as those soldiers share for the first time what they witnessed. Willacy also confronts those accused about their sides of the story.

At its heart, Rogue Forces is a story about the true heroes who had the courage to come forward and expose the truth.

This is their story. A story that had to be told.

"[T]his brilliant and courageous book should be required reading for anyone seeking to paint our most recent military adventure as morally unambiguous. As Willacy shows, the “moral injury” sustained by many veterans was often a case of friendly fire." The Australian

Really challenging book

This book should be on all Australians reading lists. The real cost of war the cost on humans. The bulls@t hero worship of SAS stereotype continues with crappy reality shows that presents bullying as entertainment. If you cannot bear to listen to this book, don’t dismiss it as lies, face the horrible truth of the reality of how culture can easily become a cult…

Heavy material, but worth it

Definite trigger warning required. A solid recount of the evidence so far. Excellent narration.

Magnificent

A book that no one really ever wanted to read because no one ever really wanted to believe it was all possible. Magnificently and accurately written with passion and heart. Mark cuts through redacted reports and researches extensively to discover the true stories of some SASR servicemen in Afghanistan. He also researches well beyond the murderers, exposing the real long term costs when a military unit loses its way. I highly recommend this book.

Absolutely Brilliant - MUST READ

Like many, I was a rusted on ‘patriot’ who simply refused to believe my lying eyes, even after seeing the confronting footage from ‘killing field.’ By nature I am not a media fan, but this book absolutely blew me away. Incredibly researched and narrated, this book shines a light on the darkest acts in our proud military history. My fingers are crossed that the people who sullied the incredible bravery of our men and women in the ADF are held accountable.

a must listen

this book has been a confronting and uncomfortable account of the actions of a few, that affected the lives of many in Australia's military. I listened to it at every opportunity I could, eager to find out more. this is a story that needed to be told and importantly needs to be heard by as many as possible to properly understand the attrosity of this war and the impact on the innocent people of Afghanistan.

Breathtaking book!

What an amazing audiobook and a staggering account!
I have no special interest in the army, or SAS in general but like many, Killing Field has shocked me and I got this book to understand more about what happened before and after it aired.
From beginning to end, I was stuck to this audio and it took me a day to listen to it. The diction is perfect. At no time did I think that a part was dragging on or unnecessary.
The witnesses featuring in the book are the real heroes. Mark Willacy has given his heart and understanding to this initially unwanted assignment and I think as Australians we should be thankful for it.
What a masterpiece.

All Australians will feel the shame for how we allowed our special forces descend into stormtroopers

A sad and honest truth!

A must read on the damaging effects of the violence of war on the human psyche! No one is immune! It takes extraordinary courage to be a truth teller. I am truly perplexed by those who rate this quality investigative journalism with 1 star?
