Rogue Forces is the explosive first insiders’ story of how some of Australia’s revered SAS soldiers crossed the line in Afghanistan, descending from elite warriors to unlawful killers.

Mark Willacy, who won a Gold Walkley for exposing SAS war crimes, has penetrated the SAS code of silence to reveal one of the darkest chapters in our country’s military history.

Willacy’s devastating award-winning Four Corners program, Killing Fields, captured on film for the first time a war crime perpetrated by an Australian: the killing of a terrified, unarmed Afghan man in a field by an SAS soldier. It caused shockwaves around the world and resulted in an Australian Federal Police war crimes investigation. It also sparked a new line of investigation by the Brereton inquiry, the independent Australian Defence Force inquiry into war crimes in Afghanistan. It was a game changer.

But for Willacy, it was just the beginning of a much bigger story. More SAS soldiers came forward with undeniable evidence and eyewitness testimony of other unlawful killings, and exposed a culture of brutality and impunity.

Rogue Forces takes you out on the patrols where the killings happened. The result is a gripping character-driven story that embeds you on the front line in the thick of the action as those soldiers share for the first time what they witnessed. Willacy also confronts those accused about their sides of the story.

At its heart, Rogue Forces is a story about the true heroes who had the courage to come forward and expose the truth.

This is their story. A story that had to be told.

"[T]his brilliant and courageous book should be required reading for anyone seeking to paint our most recent military adventure as morally unambiguous. As Willacy shows, the “moral injury” sustained by many veterans was often a case of friendly fire." The Australian

Breathtaking book!

What an amazing audiobook and a staggering account!
I have no special interest in the army, or SAS in general but like many, Killing Field has shocked me and I got this book to understand more about what happened before and after it aired.
From beginning to end, I was stuck to this audio and it took me a day to listen to it. The diction is perfect. At no time did I think that a part was dragging on or unnecessary.
The witnesses featuring in the book are the real heroes. Mark Willacy has given his heart and understanding to this initially unwanted assignment and I think as Australians we should be thankful for it.
What a masterpiece.

Required listening

Mark Willacy has put together a "blow by blow" account of what is required to document and expose crimes conducted by members of Australian special forces whilst on deployment in Afghanistan. The level of research put into this publication is of the highest caliber and it really contributes to the authenticity of the accounts recalled by ADF members. The book demonstrates a definitive timeline of the actions taken to expose Australian war crimes and what transpired after shocking allegation of the killings of innocent civilians in Afghanistan occurred. I strongly recommend this book if one wishes to understand the Caulture in the ADF and what is required to challenge and change it by individuals seeking truth and resolve.

Hard hitting

One of the hardest hitting books I’ve read. Mark Willacy has done a fantastic job at unveiling a very dark element of Australia. The fallout for the people on all sides of this story are horrific, and I wish I could thank the witnesses that allowed this story to be written.

Ashamed

this is a very ,very smelly stain on our ADF record. The unflinching Substance and solid foundation of the Australians soldiers physic has been desecrated . Even in war there is no place for cruelty with out justice . The upper comand should resigne forthwith . you trained a killers and failed to keep them on a tight leash within a solid cammand structure.

Heavy material, but worth it

Definite trigger warning required. A solid recount of the evidence so far. Excellent narration.
