Publisher's Summary

Here is a BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of one of the most famous adventure stories of all time, starring Roy Marsden as Robinson Crusoe.

Young Robinson Crusoe has a burning ambition to be a sailor. Paying no attention to his parent's warnings, he runs away to sea to embark on an extraordinary series of adventures: struggles with Barbary pirates, a shipwreck, and the extraordinary meeting with Man Friday.

Roy Marsden plays the older Robinson Crusoe looking back on a life of recklessness, daring and adventure - and the survival of 28 years, two months and 19 days on a desert island.

Based on the real-life adventures of Alexander Selkirk, son of a Scottish shoemaker, Robinson Crusoe was one of the very first adventure stories to be published in English literature, and it remains as gripping today as it was on publication in 1719.

great way to enjoy historic literature

Listened to this to prepare for a book club discussion. Pleasantly surprised. Enjoyed story. Crusoe's interaction with Friday was racist while thinking it was benevolent, but that Dynamic is a product of its time. Looking forward to researching commentary. Attempted to listen to unabridged book. It didn't hold my attention for long. This dramatization was much more engaging. Really enjoyed the performance.

Crusoe still carries a punch.

Another enthralling listen that resonates to the present day with its story of survival amidst stormy seas.
