About this listen

‘This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You’ll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It’s a step-by-step history of my twenty-three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I’ll never go back. It’s not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner...’ Mark ‘Chopper’ Read is over fifty years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. And he knows what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense. This audiobook is Chopper’s redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight.©2011 Mark Brandon Read (P)2011 Bolinda Publishing True Crime Crime

Good read, factual a bit blood thirsty at times but then prison is no kindergarten and rules MUST be observed both prison regimen and crims unwritten rules. Flowed well and the narration had me walking along side Chopper.

A very good and insightful look into the life of Chopper and he's criminal/prison career. Andy McPhee done this book justice big time. I listened to this with my brother in a night the stories were funny, sad and entertaining. Great read highly recommend.

Awesome Narrator

Chopper telling his side of the story of his life, choices and his own unique justification for his behaviour behind bars.
At the end of Chopper's story I am left wondering what benefit incarceration has on people with Chopper's mindset.

Had me from the first words - brilliant narrator I believed I was listening to Chopper himself. I thoroughly enjoyed Marks story.

Gritty and Honest

Not flashy or pretentious, just a well written piece of literature about Australia’s most fascinating and charismatic criminal.

Having already listened to Chopper’s first two books, I was expecting this one to be good also. I was wrong. It’s better! A real insight of what it was like to serve time in Pentridge prison, and myriad of characters MBR came into contact with. Superbly narrated as well. If you still manage to continue listening after Mark’s chapter two’s Yugoslav encounter, then you have more coming! Hard to put down!

Brilliant from start to finish!
