Rudi soll Ritter werden, was ihm gar keine Freude macht. Lieber möchte er ein großer Maler werden. Seinem Onkel zuliebe macht er sich trotzdem auf die Reise, um drei Mutproben zu erfüllen. Folgende Gegenstände soll Rudi nach Hause bringen: Das Ei eines Höhlendrachen, die Feder eines Goldvogels und die Blüte einer fleischfressenden Pflanze. Alle drei Mutproben misslingen. Am Ende seiner Reise hat er nur Bilder von den Gegenständen gemalt. Der König jedoch ist begeistert und adelt Rudi zu seinem persönlichen Maler am Königshof.
