Publisher's Summary

A straight-shooting Silicon Valley executive reveals insider career strategies to becoming a great leader, developing your network, succeeding without wasting time, and managing trade-offs between your work and life so your life works.

Patty Azzarello became the youngest general manager at Hewlett-Packard at age 33, ran a $1 billion software business at 35, and became a CEO at 38 - all without turning into a self-centered, miserable jerk. In Rise, Azzarello shares the insider secrets to advancing your career (while having a life) in three practical steps:

  • Do better: Set ruthless priorities, and work and lead more strategically to deal with frustrating obstacles.
  • Look better: Build your credibility with the people who can help (or blacklist) you.
  • Connect better: Develop your network without being political. Get on "the list" of people who get the best opportunities.

Whether you are just starting up the corporate ladder, stuck midcareer, transitioning, or eyeing the corner office, Rise shows you the difference between getting ahead and just working hard.

Great book, grating narration

Wish I could exchange it for a paperback. I usually love audio books read by the author but the author's voice is harsh and unpleasant in this one.

Excellent on every front

This is the closest you'll get to a pocket sized version of Patty in your pocket. Rewind when you need to and give yourself more time to absorb and consider how you'll apply it to your world. This isn't just a book about how to excel at work; it's a book on how to stay sane at work when you have a lot to do and keep getting more to do. Patty's advice is specific and practical and you don't have to do it all at once - for that reason you can customize it. I read this several years ago and wanted to re-read it before considering a new position at work, so I downloaded the audio book. It is very confidence building in that it's a sort of "skeleton key" to working on the stuff that matters at work. Apart from that, it considers all of this from the standpoint where work is a part of your life and NOT your life. It's worth a ton for that reason alone. I don't just want to get ahead, I want to work on things that matter; things that "move the needle". I spend a bunch of time at work and I want to have something to show for it. I feel like I now have many practical strategies as well as tactical ideas on how to do that and still like my life. :)

Thank you Patty

Would you consider the audio edition of Rise to be better than the print version?

We've never met and candidly I was unfamiliar with you before hearing you being interview on Something You Should Know podcast. Great content and wise, useful advice. I bought a copy for me and one for my son and son-in-law. I'm near retirement but reading your book will help me in conversation with them on the topics you've written about. Again, thank you.

Better than expected

This book is packed with the personal experiences of a CEO and it is very nicely structured and presented. I bought the paper version too, so I can revisit it as an action plan, when I feel the need (it is impossible for me to keep track of all the details by only listening). The author sounded a bit partonizing at first, however, I saw a few of her videos and that completely changed my perception of her. I really enjoyed all of her great advice; she feels now like a best friend of mine or something :) I can only recommend this book (but do yourself a favor and increase the speed).

Speed it up

Useful blueprint for professional development. I found it very helpful to speed up the narration.
