Publisher's Summary

When Tubby informs his fiancee that her new hat makes her look like a Pekingese, she is naturally incensed. But it is when he questions the validity of the story of her narrow escape from a beastly, hungry shark that the engagement is firmly called off. But love is in the air for Gussie Fink-Nottle. He abandons his beloved newts to court the new object of his affections, the dreamy and romantic Miss Madeline Bassett. He is dressed as Mephistopheles...and it appears that even the Devil can rely on Jeeves.

Critic Reviews

"Jonathan Cecil reads the story with a fine ear for comic wordplay and absurdity, giving fitting caricatured voices to the likes of Fink-Nottle and Glossop. He gives Wooster's first-person narrative the right balance, letting the bumbling hero misread situations as needed. The chaos builds toward a crescendo of levity that will be a favorite among Wodehouse fans." (AudioFile)

One of the best by the greatest comic novelist.

Sublime. A world to revisit whenever the skies are grey and a sparkling restorative is needed.

Fabulous story, unparalleled narrating, terrible audio

As with all Jeeves and Wooster stories this is another beautifully written masterpiece, equally masterfully narrated by the perfect Jonathan Cecil. Terrible audio is the only negative and the publishers really should fix that. Surely the technology is available to do such a fix post production these days.

excellent

Another wonderfullly crafted and excellently performed novel about Bertram and Jeeves. This one involves a newt fanatic, a sanguin French chef, a love quadrangle involving a retissant Bertie, a fire alarm and a late night bicycle ride!

Brilliant but recording play issues

Brilliant with only marring being by audible chapters having no coherence with book’s structure and chapter sequence, also several times there was a sudden slight shift in play back speed. Jonathon Cecil is ( was) brilliant and perfect. Witty, rollicking, laugh out loud and very clever.

Disastrous sound

The story is well and truly Wooster, the reading is excellent, but the sound technician should in the olden days, so to speak, have aspired to a public whipping. Some sixty well earned lashes...😊

Audio quality

The audio quality on this version is poor. There seem to be patchy drops in quality of the recording which make for a poor experience.

Absolutely wonderful

The reader - Jonathan Cecil - does a brilliant job - this has been a pleasure to listen to from start to finish. It is incredibly funny, beautifully crafted, and hugely entertaining. I cannot commend the book (and its reader!) enough

Very well read. Shame about the quality.

Fantastically well read. You couldn't wish for better. It's a shame such a good reader was cursed with the work experience boy recording him with a series of cheap dictaphones on a windy hillside.

Incredible

This is one of the best audio books around! Very funny and a classic PG Wodehouse story line. If you are considering buying it then I suggest that you buy it strait away without another thought.

Vintage Wodehouse, mostly excellent narration

Anyone wanting an introduction to Jeeves and Wooster could do no better than begin right here: classic stuff, from the imperious Aunt Dahlia to the hapless school chum Fink-Nottle, this will have you laughing out loud from start to finish. Jonathan Cecil does a mostly splendid job of the narration - however, his Bertie Wooster voice changes slightly about halfway through, becoming several tones deeper and slightly closer to that of Jeeves, which is confusing and jarring. Overall, though, a wonderful performance delivered with brio.

Wonderful

Wonderful book, delightfully read by Jonathan Cecil. Amazon is forcing me to write more words but that's all I had to say.

Brilliantly written & read. Shoddily recorded

Jonathan Cecil does a sterling job narrating this brilliant book. Needs a spot of remastering to do it justice though - get the butler on it Audible!

Classic humour, bitty audio

Brilliantly funny tale with excellently dry narration but it seems to be a mix of different recordings for some reason.

Delightful Wodehouse, ideal narrator

Usual delightful Wodehouse capers, narrator Jonathon Cecil is ideal - understated to just the right degree (not all Wodehouse narrators are as good)
