About this listen

The brooding hero, gypsy Jake Lovell, under whose magic hands the most difficult horse or woman becomes biddable, is driven to the top by his loathing of the darling of the show ring, Rupert Campbell-Black.

Having filched each other’s horses, and fought and fornicated their way around the capitals of Europe, the feud between the two men finally erupts with devastating consequences at the Los Angeles Olympics.

I’ve always loved this book and Gerri’s narration was wonderful. A lovely little horsey escape.

Egged on by my wife Marie Wilson who was a teenage NZ Show jump champion 1975, and had devoured Jilly Cooper's books in the '80s.
This is the most famous of her long novels and I found it a great romp. At 29hrs, published in 1985, the genre is an erotic romance, intricate plots and in the UK often called a "Bonkbuster" book. There is lots of delightful politically incorrect hubba hubba here and her worst but most famous character Rupert Campbell-Black is to turn up in other books.

Riders is a gloriously dirty, sexy, silly, funny romp through the world of showjumping. Campbell-Black, shagging his way through horsey wives and hangers-on was based on a number of people according to Cooper.
She won the inaugural Comedy women in print lifetime achievement award in 2019.
Highly Recommend.

Go the Bonkbuster !

I had forgotten how great Jilly Cooper’s stories are after reading them all years ago - outdated in some respects but so accurate in others - looking forward to the next one in the series

Great

Loves all the characters good and bad except Helen who was a whiny needy self indulgent drain on all those around her. Rupert totally disgraceful but seemed to get away with it. Now to Rivals!

The 80s at its hedonistic heights

I had my doubts at the beginning, then before I knew it, I was swept into the ‘days of our lives’ in British show jumping society. A wonderful blend of characters, fast moving storyline, enough naughtiness and OMG moments and easy enjoyable female narration.
Once I started, I could not stop and I loved the ending, even she’d some tears.
Definitely worth one credit for 28 hours of addictive listening.

Simply splendid

I first read this book many years ago! I was a young teen at the time. It was truly an awesome experience having someone else read the whole book to me.
I loved the whole series of these and I'll be going through them on here now 30 years later!!

Loved it !!

I read the book around 40 years ago as a teenager and thought it was terribly racy at the time. Now it’s unfortunately outdated and horribly sexist with some scenes that are tantamount to rape.

Slightly out of date

I’d never heard the term ‘bonkbuster’ until a recent article about the adaptation of Rivals in the Guardian. Meanwhile, my sister had told me a while back she’d been enjoying Jilly Cooper’s books, so I decided to give Riders a go and I wasn’t disappointed. Great narration, really fun characters and interesting storylines. Who knew the show jumping world could be so intriguing:)). As for the notorious RCB that everyone loves to hate, I’ve also fallen under his spell despite hating his guts for his appalling behaviour. I was quite moved a number of times throughout this book, it’s not just good smutty fun, though there’s plenty of that. The only thing is, it is a book of its time, lots of fat phobia etc, but probably true to how many people thought back in the 80s. Highly recommend this exciting, sexy romp. Looking forward to checking out Jilly Cooper’s other books, just wish they had the same narrator.

Loved this so much! A sizzling romp, with heart!
