About this listen

Fake heiress. Real secrets. One sizzling summer she’ll never forget.

Event planner Valerie Peng never planned on spending her summer sipping champagne at a lakefront estate, dodging suspicious socialites, or pretending to be anyone’s long-lost daughter. But when a very public, deeply mortifying mishap lands her in hot water—and her career in a hot mess—her uber-wealthy older client makes her an offer she can’t refuse: come to his glamorous summer home and pose as the long-lost daughter he believes his conniving family has hidden from him. In exchange? Time away from her actual life...and the chance to help uncover a long-buried secret.

But Cinderella needs some magic for this big of a makeover. Enter Nico Hever: her client’s maddeningly perfect right-hand man. He’s organized, meticulous, impossible to read, and infuriatingly handsome. But even though he claims this scheme is a capital-M Mistake, Nico’s the only person she can trust to have her back. As they navigate a world of eccentric matriarchs, class divides, and private family feuds, their chemistry is as undeniable as it is ill-timed.

Caught between pretending to belong and unexpectedly finding where she truly fits in, Valerie’s summer is about to get far more complicated than she ever planned.

Loved this fluffy rom com mystery. Probably my favourite from this author so far. A great holiday read.

Bittersweet Rom Com meets scooby doo

Good story, very engaging in the beginning, but slowed down further in the book. it was way too long. Narration was good.

too long

Always enjoyable Lily Chu's subtle humour exposes flaws and fallibilities while delving into human relationships through an intriguing storyline that keeps you engaged to the end. Never disappointed listening to her pleasantly narrated tales.

Another fun expose from Lily Chu

A cheesy holiday romance involving family dysfunction and jealousies lightened only a little by a touch of comedy.
The narration was dreadful. The speed with which it was read was so mismatched between the two readers. Phillipa Soo read so quickly that I had to slow the speed considerably, which then put Stephen Pasquale’s voice into a painfully slow drawl. Very disappointing.

Cheesy storyline

Interesting storyline that started well but towards the middle the story flatlined and felt long and drawn out. Excellent narration

Started strong but frizzled out

The start was slow and the ending was slow too. I understand it's the whole premise of the story, but I found the fact that the book could have moved faster if people simply finished a conversation and asked the questions that were relevant incredibly frustrating.

Good mystery

Engaging story with well spoken actors, will re listen again for sure. Made the story around interesting social interaction for family dynamics very realistic

Good story with excellent actors, moved along nicely

An enjoyable and simple story. But now that I've read many of this author's books, I view this one as a weaker representative. I hope the author can expand her writing style to bring something more unexpected to her next work. The narrators give good performances and are pleasant to listen to.

Decent but not her best

I love Lily Chu - I see her name and automatically download the book.

I just love how there’s undeniable romance and tension without being too ‘sexy’ and that her characters are so well thought out and real.

I want to have a celebration of life now. I listened to this audiobook in the aftermath of a few moments of grief and it was a beautiful thought.

Rom com meets Wedding Planner (but celebration of life) meets Nancy Drew

The mystery element was fun and acted as a great vehicle for plot progression. Great character growth and nuanced parallels between familial dynamics. The female voice actor's narration delivery was too flat and indifferent for my tastes but both actors did a great job of the side characters.

Great concept and storyline
