Publisher's Summary

A passionate but ultimately tragic love affair starts when two students - one French, one English - meet at university at the beginning of the sixties. From its tentative, unpromising early stages, the relationship develops into a life-changing one, whose profound impact continues to reverberate forty years later.

Slow and boring

I really looked forward to this book. I admire Melvyn Bragg immensely: I enjoyed his novel 'A Time to Dance', I listen to 'In Our Time' (BBC podcast series which he hosts) and I have watched or listened to his English language shows. I'm at 2/3 of the way through 'Remember Me' but only got that far by forcing myself to keep going back in the hope that it would spark up. I am familiar with the book's settings and literary references both of which would ordinarily be a plus. But, sad to say, nothing in the book has grabbed me: the characters are not engaging and their lives and thought processes are ordinary at best. Mark McGann does a fine job but good narration couldn't rescue this long and boring tale.
