I don’t remember there ever being a time when I weren’t out upon beach. Mam used to say the window was open when I was born, and the first thing I saw when they held me up was the sea.

Mary Anning may be young and uneducated, but she has “the eye”. Scouring the windswept Jurassic coast near Lyme Regis, she find the fossils nobody else can, making discoveries that will shake the scientific world of the early 19th century. But science is a male-dominated arena, and there are many who disapprove…

She finds an unlikely champion in prickly Elizabeth Philpot: unmarried, middle-aged and middle class, and a fellow fossil enthusiast. If they can weather differences in their age and standing, and overcome professional envy, will true friendship prove the rarest find of all?

This is seamlessly written and delightfully told. The narrator is perfect and makes a distinction between two character voices. I’m very pleased I took up my friends recommendation to buy it. Its history opened up all its colour and sounds and emotions. The women whose passion for fossils is unmatched have particular difficulties getting their work taken seriously by those who should know better. The questions they raise, the navigation of a prehistoric past poses to religion is all part of this tale. I couldn’t stop listening to it and felt very happy and satisfied but also a bit sad to see them go back into history.

Friendship and passionate endeavour

I was transported by this book. I found it wonderfully evocative, poignant and a wonderfully told story. While I know it is only based in fact, there is enough real history there to make it compelling and left me ready to research the real Mary Anning. I didn’t want the book to end.

A remarkable book, very well written and beautifully narrated

Hattie has brought Tracy’s novel to life. I listened to Curious Creatures during long work commutes , the story and narration transported my commute into something I looked forward to.

Thank you for Curious Creatures.

Completely unexpected

I loved this story. It has really renewed an interest in fossils for me. Now, when I see fossils I will be thinking of those who found them. Tracy Chevalier is a master of historical fiction and this story didn't disappoint.

Beautiful story.
