Publisher's Summary

Shenshee Whooldan lives with her grandfather in the Celkee Forest until tragedy strikes and her grandfather dies at the hands of a demon. Before he dies, he confers the job of Keeper of the Portals on her. She has no idea what that means, since she didn’t even know the Keeper existed. Her task is first to find the keys to all the portals, get the immortals to enter, and lock each so the immortals will be safe from the demon.

The second task is to find the demon and send him to the Netherworld. The Keeper of the Portals has always been handed down to adults who have been trained for years because demon hunting is an extremely dangerous occupation. Shenshee is only 12, so she was never trained. After her grandfather’s death, she is sent to an orphanage, further limiting her ability to fulfill her promises to her grandfather.

As she hunts for the keys, it becomes a struggle. No one believes in the immortals anymore, the demon is stalking her, another orphan is out to make her life miserable, and her teacher seems to not like her very much. To make things worse, the demon is gaining strength while Shen frantically hunts for the keys.
