Die Geschichte des Jazz war von ihren Anfängen im Süden der USA bis zur Hochblüte des Swing-Stils eng mit dem Begriff „hot“ verbunden, dem englischen Begriff für „heiß“ und auch „scharf“. Übersetzt in die musikalische Sprache bedeutete das: emotional, ungestüm, expressiv, und was die Tonbildung betrifft: rauh, unrein, mit viel Vibrato, der menschlichen Stimme angenähert. Auch der Bebop entsprach noch diesen Idealen, und dennoch begannen die Musiker dafür ein Adjektiv anzuwenden, das sprachlich scheinbar das genaue Gegenteil von „hot“ bedeutete: „cool“. So gab Charlie Parker bei seiner bemerkenswerten Schallplattensitzung vom 19. Februar 1947 einer der Nummern den Titel „Cool Blues“.
