Die Geschichte spielt im Jahr 1848 in den italienischen Unabhängigkeitskriegen. Auf dem Weg nach Mailand durchkämmt ein italienisches Streifkommando die noch österreichische Lombardei. Nach einigen kleinen Gefechten wird Mailand eingenommen und durchquert. Wachtmeister Anton Lerch trifft dort auf eine Bekannte und gibt sich danach erotischen Fantasien hin. In einer späteren Schlacht kehrt er mit seiner vollständigen Truppe und Beute stolz zu seinem Vorgesetzten, einem Rittmeister, zurück. Als Lerch einen Befehl verweigert, wird er erschossen.
