About this listen

Reinventing Joan is about a minor character from my book, Testing Michael. Thirteen-year-old Michael meets her while he's serving in the Civil War. This is her story.

She's a young girl born in Connecticut in 1837 who has a tragic life, and joins the Civil War at age 22, posing as a man. She reinvents herself along the way, from tomboy to young lady, to wife, mother, widow, soldier. Her three older brothers taught her to be strong and independent and her family taught her love and loyalty to country.

The mid 1800s was a tough time to live through, and a lot of people in Joan's life didn't make it either due to sicknesses for which there were no cures, or weather, or other reasons.

Reinventing Joan is the story of a heroic struggle against all odds.
