About this listen
“All magic is beautiful...and terrible. Do you not see the beauty in yours, nor the terror in mine? You can stop a heart, and I can stop your breath.”
She is heir to a Sultanate that once ruled the world. He is an unwanted prince with the power to destroy. She is order and intellect, a woman fit to rule in a man's place. He is chaos and violence and will stop at nothing to protect his people.
His magic answers hers with shadow for light. They need each other, but the cost of balance may be too high a price. Magic is dying and the only way to save it is to enlist mages who wield the forbidden power of death, mages cast out centuries ago in a brutal and bloody war.
Now, a new war is coming. Science and machines to replace magic and old religion.
They must find a way to save their people from annihilation and balance the sacred Wheel—but first, they will have to balance their own forbidden passion. His peace for her tempest, his restlessness for her calm.
Night and day, dusk and dawn, the end, and the beginning.

The narration performance was fantastic and I give high praise to both narrators. Their accents were great and I have recommended this audiobook to many friends.
Beautiful narration to suit an amazing story

The political intrigue was intriguing, the plot was complex and nuanced but I didn't need copious notes or resources in order to follow it.
The main couple were great, FMC is strong (mentally & emotionally) smart, independent and unequivocally feminine. The MMC is an absolute dreamboat of a supportive boyfriend. If anyone knows where I might find my very own Makram please let me know, he's a gem.
The villain was very villainous, I hated him so much (in a scream through gritted teeth way, not the "love to hate him" way..... He might be a little "too realistic" upon reflection, I easily picture any number of today's politicians for his character.
Spoilery bit.....

Have finished books 1-3, eagerly awaiting book 4 in a few days time. I sense a redemption arc coming for one particularly icky side character which leaves me a little nervous, but I see the seeds that have been sown, and based on the handling of the other books I don't think this author would expect us to just forget his past transgressions and get onboard, I'm confident if he does get redeemed it will be with a well planned arc that paints previous events in a new light.
Overall I'm a huge fan of the series and would happily pick up any future offerings from this author.
Great Narration, beautifully considered story

The world building is rich and tangible, the prose and dialogue is lyrical yet restrained, the slow burn is a gorgeous smoulder that had me in an absolute chokehold before they even met!
At its heart this is a deeply feminist book—the FMC is amazing, a brilliant mind and leader fighting to hold onto her birthright as heir of the Sultan despite being a woman in a patriarchal society. Where it takes off for me is in the way the MMC really SEES her and their shared ideals, and seeks to support her vision rather than try to grasp at her power or control or subjugate her as others have tried to.
Highly recommended adult fantasy romance!
