Reginald, der Jahrhundertbär, wird 1905 in der Bärenmanufaktur von Margarete Steiff in Giengen geboren. Thomas Fairyblossom, ein junger Künstler, hat ihn dort für seine Nichte Violet, die in Bombay lebt, gekauft. Die Reise dort hin führt Reginald also über Salzburg, Wien, Prag und Triest nach Bombay. Violet nimmt ihn mit nach England, wo er nach ihrem Tod mit Richard, dem Sohn des Chauffeurs der Familie nach Frankreich an die Front gelangt. Richard fällt im ersten Weltkrieg und eine Krankenschwester nimmt ihn mit in das Kloster Bonnemont in der Provence. An der Seite eines jungen Mannes reist Reginald nach Amerika und wird dort das Maskottchen des Opernsängers Gino Valetti. Nach dessen tragischen Tod erlebt er aufregende Zeiten in Ägypten und gelangt dann, Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges, nach London. Er übersteht einen Bombenangriff und bleibt viele Jahre bei Kommissar Söderström. Nach dessen Tod wartet er auf dem Dachboden einer Berliner Villa auf seine Entdeckung. Reginalds bester Freund auf all diesen Reisen ist Shari, ein uralter Luftgeist, der mit ihm allerlei traumhafte Abenteuer erlebt. Dorothea Bartels hat Reginald, das Original zusammen mit einem Koffer voller Bilder auf einer Bärenmesse gekauft.
