Publisher's Summary

Casey McQuiston's royally romantic enemies to lovers bestseller. Now a Prime Original movie starring Nicholas Galitzine, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Uma Thurman, and Stephen Fry.

What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales?

Alex Claremont-Diaz is handsome, charismatic, a genius – pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House ever since his mother first became President of the United States. There’s only one problem. When the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an altercation between Alex and Prince Henry, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse.

Heads of family and state devise a plan for damage control: stage a truce. But what begins as a fake, Instagrammable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon they are hurtling into a secret romance that could derail the presidential campaign and upend two nations.

Critic Reviews

"Red, White & Royal Blue is outrageously fun. It is romantic, sexy, witty and thrilling. I loved every second." (Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times best-selling author of Daisy Jones & The Six)

WAAYYYY TOO POLITICAL

I struggled to finish this one tbh. I'm neither British nor American so maybe I wasn't the intended audience for this book but the 'angels vs demons' dichotomy of US politics features heavily here and I hated it. It got so extreme that some of the very serious topics this book touched on (racism, sexism, SA, etc) were ruined by unnecessary politicisation and it just felt cheap and lazy.

Aside from this book’s borderline propagandist acclamation of the pure, virtuous and faultless Democratic party (as opposed to the dirty, evil and criminal Republicans) this book didn’t even go into the politics that actually mattered. A romantic relationship between a British prince and the son of an American president has some serious political consequences that are just ignored here. Normally I would be able to suspend my disbelief for this but given how much the McQuiston goes into the inner workings of presidential campaigns and policymaking, I would have expected this book to engage with the problems which arise from its own premise. This is where we could have seen Alex demonstrate his supposed genius political skills. This is where the story’s conflict lies. Engage with it!

The other reason I didn’t particularly like this book is the representation of the royal family and British culture in general. It’s very clear that McQuiston subscribes to the (usually American) idea that the royals are posh celebrities who sit in palaces drinking tea and eating cucumber sandwiches made for them by “servants” (the actual word, actually used). Basically, everything about the UK felt like a condescending, cutesy parody of the real country. It was hard to see Henry as a three dimensional character and relate to his compelling – and frankly understandable – mental health issues when he and everyone around him were nothing more than caricatures of how people.

In the end, I finished this book just because of the sunk cost fallacy and was glad when it was over. The last chapter was just about his mother’s re-election campaign and full of cringey and idealistic public speeches which have nothing to do with the main story or romance in general so you can skip it if you like.

Overall, just a really frustrating read.

Love it

Funny and engaging story. Love all the characters. Loved how A & H fell in love so absolutely and how they supported each other. I am a sucker for happy endings, so I am happy with the end. Love the narrators voice.

Beautiful story

I loved this story. I preferred reading the book as I didn’t really love the narrators voice for Henry but overall it was a great narration. Also looking forward to watching the movie.

Love the politics and the story

Great story, well written, and so aware to the realities of the impact of bigotry and hatred on queer young people. And a lovely fantasy of a world where Trump and his long long presidency of hatred lies and anti democracy never existed.

Love this book

I recommend reading it if you like boy love but you have to read it because I refuse to spoil the book but it’s so good I even got the physical book the next day after hearing it for two hours and I have dyslexia. It’s a beautiful read I recommend it in the characters are all explained real well.

EXCUSE ME MA’AM!

4 stars

EXCUSE ME MA’AM! This book came out and smacked my ideas of what it was right out of my head.

I will be honest, I did not want to read this. This was chosen by someone in one of my book clubs and I was dreading reading it because for some reason, I had this idea on what it was going to be.

Boy was I wrong.

This book gave me all the emotions and had me rooting for the outcome of love from the first moment. The political side of it all was well written and thought out, but the emotional side of it was even better. And BOY I did not expect the smut.

I can see why this book was adapted for screen so quickly. It is so well written and follows such a unique, yet beautiful story!

Loved it

Happy story with a happy ending. Very erotic I must say and doesn’t take too long to get into the action haha. Story is interesting and the struggle points are well thought through. I personally rated the story a 4.5 because it’s difficult to relate to the characters, them being a prince and the presidents son, that’s just a personal preference however, it’s still an amazing story and I very much enjoyed the whole thing.

Absolutely fantastic

At first I thought I did like the narrator but after about an hour I was fully converted.
This book had me stupid grinning it was so good.
I laughed out loud, was brought to tears and swooned so hard, I don’t know what else you can wish for in a story

A heartwarming love story

This is a feel good book. It tells the story of love overcoming prejudice against all odds.

Excellent queer rom-com book!

As a rom-com book, it's great, a sweet story, relatable human characters, and a good pace. Has to be read with that on mind, since in reality we know the monarchy will never accept a gay prince, they even struggled with a mixed race marriage!

It's great to see queer and specially bi visibility in mainstream media, loved the Amazon film as well. it makes me happy that the new generations have books and films they can look after, growing up, where they can see themselves represented, something that was unthinkable for older millennials and above.

The narrator was good, he made a good effort to try the British and Mexican Spanish accent, although in the latter he struggled a bit (not all rs are rolled in Spanish), but overall he did a good job in differentiate character voices.

Very UScentric

Story was fine, a few mistakes with royal etiquette but that can be overlooked since the whole thing screams USA. The prince is a supporting character, the whole thing revolves around Alex and his family and friends in the US and its clear that this was not written with a British audience in mind, which is fine, but thought I may have enjoyed it more if the characters were given equal page time and background.

Doesn't live up to the hype

This book went viral on my social media a while back so I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about. Unfortunately it was absolute rubbish. I don't expect a book like this to be hugely realistic but there were a few things in it that showed it was very clearly written by an American who had very little understand of the United Kingdom, referring at one point to 'the Prince of England' like the rest of Britain and the UK doesn't exist. It was small things like that the ruined my enjoyment quite a bit along with the fairly predictable story line. Definitely doesn't live up to the hype.

Couldn’t finish it

I gave up half way through, something I don’t often do, but I just couldn’t take cringing through the rest of the book. Too political, too much uncomfortable smut and didn’t care for any of the characters.

Romance with important message

It took a fair share of chapters to grab interest in the story. I almost returned it because of that. I'm quite glad I didn't.
The love story would not have this much impact without the context of the world we live in.
I cried. Twice.
But not so much for a couple, so for the hope that one day this HEA could've happened. Hope for a more tolerant and open-minded world.

The 1st son and the prince...a thing?

The idea for a book - is good. Interesting. The bad thing was that the author showed a lack of knowledge about royalty or British royalty. There were a few unrealistic things. The chemistry between Alex and Henry is pretty good. The chapters are a bit too long.

Fun, and not entirely clichéd and forgettable for a change.

A decent story, with both typical and non-typical cliches. It was a fun listen and I like the characters. Has more substance than the film and I know get why some people lamented the fact they cut out whole characters from the book and decent chunks of the plot too. It's only drawback as a UK listener is the narrator, who hasn't quite grasped the English accent. I don't know why they didn't hire a UK actor to do a US accent for Alex, as we have a better hit rate for doing a decent accent than Americans do a British one.

DNF

Narration was ok although a few words where mispronounced 🙈
I really did try to get through this book unfortunately it is definitely for an American audience only. Overly political. Everything screams USA, a few royal etiquette mistakes that I tried to get over to focus on the story. Very one-sided everything seems to be about how great Alex is, him in the White House and his connections.
Not adapted to a uk audience

I’m obsessed.

I just love this story and the characters. The characters are well developed and different and likeable.

Of course you suspend reality when you listen as a Brit there are certainly elements which jar with your understanding. But that’s so irrelevant. The heart of this story is how successfully the author navigates the challenge we all have in being brave enough to be our true selves. This challenge can be greater if you’re not straight or white, or without family support etc. Then we beautifully see how being your true self is powerful. And when you find the people who love you for who you really are (and not who you’re expected to be) then you are unstoppable.

Love is indomitable.

Wish I could give it infinity stars.

Great story - bad English accent

It destroyed the prince-illusion that the person who recorded the voiceover had such a bad British accent
