Summary

November 2009. Sergei Magnitsky is led to an isolation cell in a Moscow prison and beaten to death by eight police officers. His crime? If someone had told me that a book about high finance, the stock market and the Russian economy was going to be interesting, I would have yawned and looked the other way. But I didn't - and I'm very glad I didn't! This is an incredible true story, one which vividly exposes the corruption and violence of modern day Russia, and specifically concentrates on the murder by the Russian authorities of an innocent lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky. The author, Bill Browder, a close friend of Magnitsky, carries the reader from his earliest days as an up-and-coming businessman to his transformation as a human rights activist, for which the murder of his friend was the catalyst. The courage and bravery of Browder, Magnitsky and the others who worked to expose the corruption is evident, particularly in their stance against the tyrannical Russian President, Vladimir Putin. It's a story that needs to be told and it continues to this day.

A friend of mine recommended this book to me. I was mesmerised not only by the well-written nature of this story, but also by the fact that it was non fiction: an account of real world political intrigue and injustice. Highly recommended reading.
