Publisher's Summary

A Black father. A white father. Two murdered sons. A quest for vengeance.

Ike Randolph has been out of jail for 15 years, with not so much as a speeding ticket since. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah's white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss.

Derek's father, Buddy Lee, was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed that his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though...and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-cons with little in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, band together in a desperate desire for retribution. In their quest to do better for their children in death than they did in life, they must confront their prejudices about their sons - and each other - as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt them.

A provocative revenge thriller and an achingly tender story of redemption, this novel is a ferocious portrait of grief, for those loved and lost and for mistakes than can never truly be undone.

Outstanding storyline

This book leaves me speechless….unreal storyline and a lesson in it for all of us…the one liners were many and the characters were highly appealing!! 100% Mr Story and very well read. Top marks all round.

An Exceptional Study of Humanity

Take the extreme violence and regular very coarse language in context, set it aside if needs be, and you will discover an exceptional study of love, sacrifice and emerging understanding and acceptance.

Great modern southern crime thriller

Loved the story and the narration. A great book to listen to. This will be turned into a movie for certain and I hope they give it the depth and nuances of the book.

Plot line already looks like a formula

I enjoyed this book but for me there were two flaws. (1) Too much prosetlytising and (2) the plot twists were straight out of the authors other novel.

Yet the characters, criminals with a good side struggle with internal fights as well as the external ones, lone warriors or in this case two taking on overwhelming odds is a good listen.

The narrator is brilliant really brings Virginia to life and despite my criticism I really enjoyed the book. Just worried the next one will be too predictable.

Good story, captivating performance.

I really enjoyed this book. The humanity out weighing the violence in a brilliant want. First time listening to the author and story teller and looking forward to my next read. Thanks to Stephen King for mentioning this book on Twitter.

A digital page turner with a cutting edge

For me the narrator was superb and nailed the two main protagonists. Whilst they had flawed characters, you found yourself rooting for them against really despicable people. They had an amusing turn of phrase too which made me smile. Satisfying, if expected ending. Will check out some other books by S.A. Cosby

Pedestrian padded

Phoned it in - characters not believable, padded with unnecessary detail, and one note drawled out narration

Cliched and derivative.

Crying Game did it so much better 20 years ago. I struggled to even finish it.
