Publisher's Summary

THE BOLD NEW MEMOIR FROM SOUTH AFRICA'S DOUBLE WORLD CUP-WINNING COACH RASSIE ERASMUS

Rassie Erasmus has been called a genius. He’s been called reckless. All his life, he’s done things differently. Now, with his trademark candour, Rassie talks openly about his adventures and misadventures at the pinnacle of world rugby, both as player and coach.

From his role in Nick Mallett's record-breaking Springbok team of the late 1990s, to the devastating injuries that cut short his playing career, to his revolutionary coaching career, Rassie is an essential window into one of the most successful figures of modern rugby.

When his teammates relaxed, Rassie preferred to watch hours of video and devise winning strategies. His coaching methods were initially laughed off – before being eagerly adopted when their success proved undeniable. He fought the rugby establishment at the Stormers, and later earned the grudging respect of Irish fans at Munster.

Most crucially, Rassie talks about his greatest contribution to South African rugby: appointing its first black captain, Siya Kolisi, without much fanfare or controversy. As his bold plans for effective racial transformation of the national team achieved immediate success, they culminated in glory at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Here, that monumental period is recounted in vivid, insightful detail.

Entertaining and eye-opening, Rassie is full of behind-the-scenes revelations, telling the story of a towering figure in world rugby.

Insightful, honest look into Rassie’s life

This is an honest look into the life of one of Rugbys more polarising figures. If you liked him before, you’ll love him now. If you hated him before, you will likely end up understanding him now, and while you still may not like him, you certainly won’t hate him. He is a tactical genius, passionate about changing rugby and the rugby landscape for future generations in South Africa. The book is written by Rassie, and it reads like it was written by a rugby coach, but it is gripping and you will get through it very quickly.

Fascinating insights into SA Rugby!

Brilliant!! Pity so much time spent on the infamous video backlash and telling your side of the story. I say that because your insights into rugby, people and life were exceptional! Thank you for it all! 🙏

Living in the US

As a former South African, now living in the USA, this book was very informative about the inside game of SA rugby.
I’m a huge Bok fan and follow them religiously. Thanks Rassie. You make us ex-pats very proud.

Excellent

What a great read! I enjoyed the book from start to finish. It provides insight into Rassie as a coach and as a person. I will definitely recommend this book. I read it immediately after reading “Rise” by Siya Kohlisi. Doing so gave me an even better appreciation of Rassie’s autobiography. Amazing!

Amazing

I have mad respect and love for Rassie. This book portrays everything about Rassie we don’t get to see and a world class coach, if not the absolute best coach in the world ever.

Rassie from Dispatch

Rassie is a man from Dispatch a small town in SA and has the world of rugby at his feet - two time world champion, the puppet master of World Rugby, no one knows what he is going to do next in terms of tricks up his sleeve, don’t bet against him winning 3 RWC in a row. Great book about his upbringing and what makes him tick

Rassie’s Passion & Honesty.

Loved Rassie’s story beacause he has a gift which he uses to make life better for those who need it. He leads by example and his honesty and awareness encourage those around him to be able to stand up for what is right even when it is difficult. There are very few leaders who don’t get blinded and sucked into the hypocrisy of so called success. Well done Rassie and thank you.

I enjoyed every second of this book!

Rassie is already a remarkable man to me, but reading this and learning more about who he is and what his 'why' is had been incredible 😊 As a Xhosa woman who's been living abroad for over 20 years, it was also very special to hear Afrikaans, Xhosa and other vernacs in this...Makes me so proud to be South African. But more than anything, as a real lover of Rugby, this book is even more special. 🙏🏾

A Great Read!

Great/interesting read overall - although I preferred the first half - the second half felt like an opportunity to make excuses for bad decisions. Also as you would expect, a very one sided view - every team gets bad decisions from the ref, it’s part of the game.

Some top quality “Accidental Partridge” moments

Interesting character and some great insights if you like rugby. With a scattering of self inflating quotes and Partridge esque explanation of the famous Rassie Rant

Fascinating insight into the passion of South African rugby

Insightful and truly inspiring story about Rassie and the many other stories of the players and characters in South African rugby through the 90s, 2000s, 2010s and right up to the recent, unprecedented period of success. Highly recommended.

Absolutely brilliant

Excellent story and insights on Rassie - arguably the best rugby coach the world has ever seen. He has copped unwarranted abuse but few recognise his unbelievable achievement in levelling the playing field in SA to give all talented young players a pathway and opportunity. He has completely changed rugby SA and it is certainly paying dividends with back to back World Cups and I suspect more to still come with him at the helm. Well worth the purchase and well worth the read. Thank you Rassie.

What an incredible journey. I feel truly inspired by this book & feel nothing but admiration & reel trots for what Rassie has achieved through rugby. Nelson Mandela would have been proud.
