Publisher's Summary

In QAnon and On, Guardian columnist Van Badham delves headfirst into the QAnon conspiracy theory, unpicking the why, how and who behind this century’s most dangerous and far-fetched internet cult.

From Gamergate to Pizzagate and beyond to QAnon, internet manipulation and disinformation campaigns have grown to a geopolitical scale and spilled into real life with devastating consequences, entangling everyone from politicians to Hollywood celebrities.

But what would motivate followers to so forcefully avoid the facts and surrender instead to made-up stories designed to influence and control? It’s a question that has haunted Van, herself a veteran of social media’s relentless trolling wars. In this daring investigation, Van exposes some of the internet’s most extreme communities to understand conspiracy cults from the inside.

QAnon and On is the story of the modern internet, the farscape of political belief and a disinformation pipeline built between the two that poses an ongoing threat to democracy itself. Shocking and mesmerising in equal measure, this book will open our eyes to the dangers of partisan belief.

Is she for real?

While the information about Q Anon was interesting I found it was more a listing of chronological events rather than an analysis of why or how it happened. I was greatly surprised at the lack of personal insight given Badham believes men can transform into women by mere claim of a feeling. I found the mocking tones as she read comments from others to be distasteful. It would have been more productive to anslyse the comments than mock them.
An opinion dressed up as academic research on a topic most accept as outside the norm.

So interesting

I had always wondered how all these conspiracies started and how friends had gotten sucked in to them. A great book, excellently narrated by the author and so interesting where all this craziness originated.

Good sense and good listen

Van Dadham had done all the work to show us how people can be drawn into believing lies and what we should do to help them.

An exhaustive and shocking account

Van Badham uses a combination of thorough research and personal investigative journalism to deliver a profound and - at times - difficult to hear history of right-wing internet conspiracies. The section on cult deprogramming in particular is very important for anyone who knows someone who got sucked down a rabbit hole. A new high bar for conspiracy reporting

Wow…

What a rabbit hole. I was aware of Q Anon, aware of disinformation but had no idea of the extent of what happened. Mind opened and blown. I hope lessons will be learned and educators will ensure future generations don’t fall prey to fake news and disinformation operators.

Thorough

This history was all at once scary, infuriating and hopeful. I love that Van provided a compassionate way forward for those of us with love ones who went down the rabbit hole.

Narration, detail. S story top notch

Van nails this as a book and smashes it for 6 by narrating it herself. Care, humour and horror blended together to document the terrible risk of conspiracy thinking. 5star listen

Should be compulsory reading

Really informative, great presentation and unbelievable content. It is amazing what people will believe and more amazing what some will do because of those beliefs.

Worth a listen

Informative and terrifying. A definite listen for anyone interested in how mis information has changed our world and the way Q has infiltrated so many levels of society including the US and Australian governments.

Good timeline of Q history

Great summary of QAnon history, a must read or listen for anyone who lost a friend or family to conspiracy since 2017.
Van Badham’s narration is also a good sleep aid. I’ll be buying a paper copy of this book to catch up on the parts missed at night.
