Publisher's Summary

When a soldier with a troubled past and a struggling songwriter agree to a marriage of convenience for the military benefits, neither expects much after saying "I do". Then tragedy strikes, and the line between what's real and what's pretend begins to blur in this smart and surprising romance perfect for fans of Nicholas Sparks and Jojo Moyes.

Cassie Salazar and Luke Morrow couldn't be more different. Sharp-witted Cassie works nights at a bar in Austin, Texas, to make ends meet while pursuing her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter. Luke is an army trainee, about to ship out for duty, who finds comfort in the unswerving discipline of service. But a chance encounter at Cassie's bar changes the course of both their lives.

Cassie is drowning in medical bills after being diagnosed with diabetes. When she runs into her old friend Frankie, now enlisted in the army, she proposes a deal: She'll marry him in exchange for better medical insurance, and they can split the increased paycheck that comes with having a "family". When Frankie declines, his attractive but frustratingly intense friend Luke volunteers to marry Cassie instead. What she doesn't know is that he has desperate reasons of his own to get married. In this unforgettable love story, Cassie and Luke must set aside their differences to make it look like a real marriage...unless, somewhere along the way, it becomes one....

The movie was better…

I hated to say this, but I read this book when the movie came out, and this book just drew out too long, and I hated the extra romance with Toby, it was boring and unnecessary.

Overall I really loved the storyline, just not as good as the movie. It drew on too long in the middle and there was such little build to the romance, it could have been a great book if those things were different.

Parts not needed (spoilers)

I was so hoping there would be more build up between the main characters. I did not care for the side romance Cassie had with Toby. All of that could of been cut out and replaced with the true romantic point of the book. Really wanted her and Jake to grow more with each other. Read the book because of the Netflix movie. Netflix’s made this book better. I love the love comes softly romances, but this book did not leave you with the feeling of love, rather the feeling of what just happened.

Movie was actually better (sad face)

The male narrator did not do a good job changing voices so the listener knew who was speaking and when the main character was thinking something versus actually saying it out loud. I didn’t love the characters! And we didn’t understand how they fell in love… they both just realized “hey I love him/her” and ending wasn’t and ending… the story was just over

Watched the movie Listened to the Book…meh on the book

Okay so I loved the movie so much I went and listened to the Book…and here is what I think…BOOK SPOILERS BELOW…YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED without a doubt the movie adaptation is SO much better. The sequence of events is pretty similar, they did leave out Cassie’s relationship with her drummer, which had they kept in the movie would have ruined the chemistry in the movie. Also the ending in the book completely sucked…I mean really that’s how the author wrote it…its almost made me dislike Cassie for being selfish. I mean seriously…and it went something like this…”I just realized I love you but I have a concert to go do and good luck with your trial…cya” Kuddos to the screenplay writers that changed it up.
Who knows maybe the author set the book up for a sequel but so far I haven’t seen one?? My overall take re-watch the movie, skip the book and I hope Tess Wakefield gets her royalties ever time you click Watch Now!

This was an easy story to listen too and I enjoyed it. I liked each of the characters and was invested in their outcome.

Baffled….

…as to how a successful movie with likeable characters was based on this book. Book Cassie, Luke and even her Mum are so unbearable in the book, I am so glad they dropped the Toby and Oxy storyline for the movie.
Also the narrator for Cassie just doesn’t suit the narrative, she sounds far too mature to be a believable Cassie, which really got on my nerves.

Disappointed

Having seen and liked the movie, I was curious about the book. I am now amazed how they turned THIS into such a cute movie. I didn't care for the book characters (movie Cassie is much more likable) and the book has so many boring descriptions and weird dialogues, which is all made worse due to it being narrated.
