To many retcons...?

The story was enjoyable however it is difficult for me to feel invested in a story of the story is retconed... for instance, the protagonist has been able to fly since book 2 after having gained bat form. This seems to have been forgotten in books 3 and 4 now that the protagonist makes such a big deal about not being able to use his wings.
