Unverhofft kommt oft. Und so kommt es, dass Professor van Dusen und Hutchinson Hatch nicht, wie vorgesehen, bei einem wissenschaftlichen Vortrag landen, sondern inmitten des Berliner Grunewalds. Dort, in einem abgelegenen Haus, machen die beiden eine entsetzliche Entdeckung: dreizehn Leichen, die im Frack um einen Tisch herum sitzen. Bei den Nachforschungen stößt van Dusen schon bald auf eine Gestalt, die hinter vorgehaltener Hand "Das Gespenst von Berlin" genannt wird. Doch was hat es damit auf sich? Die Denkmaschine muss erst das Rätsel der dreizehn Toten lösen, um die Spur des Verbrechers aufnehmen zu können.
