About this listen

Emory Ker

Who makes out with a random guy at a club while someone else is giving him head? Not me—that's who. I'd never even hooked up with a stranger. Welp, now I had. If you could call what I'd done hooking up. But it was so much more intimate than a hook-up. I'd tasted his lips as someone else made him come. He'd gasped into my mouth.

Now I'm sitting in front of him, and he's asking me to kiss him again.

River Wade

We became famous overnight. One day, I was a twenty-four-year-old drummer slinging pizzas to make ends meet, and the next, I was a member of the most popular alternative band ever.

Despite being world-famous, there was no connection in it. I'd lost touch with reality, with intimacy. I couldn't find a place to be normal. I'd lived my entire life straight-edged while watching obsession destroy my best friend.

Obsession terrified me—that is until I met him.

The first taste left me intoxicated. The rockstar obsessed with the writer—rather funny if you think about it. After a night with him, he vanishes into thin air, and all the money in the world can't help me find him.

I have to track him down and convince him there might be millions of people who would do anything to get a chance to sleep with me, but I only had eyes for him.

Convince this beautiful boy I'm pretty obsessed.

Pretty Obsessed is an out-for-you romance with a dirty-talking, obsessive rockstar who falls for a cinnamon roll writer. This is book one in The Pretty Broken series. All books follow a different couple.

I thought this story started off great but it just plateaued with really no plot. I kept waiting for something to happen, but nothing ever did. When the ex-boyfriend showed up I thought finally something‘s going to happen now. But it didn’t. They argued and he left and that was the end of it. I thought maybe Iris would be attacked, or he might OD, but again, nope. All the talk of his issues and nothing happened. I thought the bad Manager might do something. Again, nope. How this story can be so long with nothing happening is beyond me.

The other issue I had is the weird conversational language. It is so bizarrely stilted and formal and completely unsuited to 20-something guys, one of whom is a rock star. That same rock star referring to his boyfriend as ‘dear’ is equally bizarre.

I can’t recommend and won’t be reading the rest in this series.

For whatever reason I did not vibe with this book. About 1/2 way through and I'm calling it, it's a DNF for me. It just felt a bit choppy and I didn't feel anything for the characters. YMMV

DNF for me

Successful YA author Emory Ker doesn’t recognise the handsome man he chats with in a sex club, but it’s none other than River Wade, the drummer of overnight sensation Pretty Broken. While Emory is openly gay, River has kept his bisexuality a secret and his manager and the label like it that way. River can’t get Emory out of his head and tracks him down not once, but twice. But the band is on tour and other band members have dramas that seem hellbent on disrupting any time River and Emory can carve out of their busy schedules.

I liked the premise of this but didn’t enjoy the experience. River and Emory were both thoroughly decent guys but their insecurities led to lots of ‘failure to communicate’ moments which I found pretty frustrating. The instalove story was buried under a heap of sex scenes which had me glazing over after a while. I’ve also worked out that I really don’t like stories where angst is one of the distinguishing features and while the angst here was only medium-level, it never seemed to let up for long. Overall, I just kept losing interest and I won’t be following up the rest of the series. 🎧 Liam DiCosimo (as Emory) and Tor Thom (as River) were ok but didn’t grab or keep my attention.

Pretty frustrating!
