Mma Ramotswe knows she is very lucky indeed. She has a loving family, good friends and a thriving business doing what she enjoys most - helping people. But the latest mystery she is called upon to solve is distinctly trickier than it initially appears, and, of course, there's plenty to handle in her personal life between Charlie and his new bride and Mma Makutsi and her talking shoes. In the end, Mma Ramotswe's patience and common sense will win out, and, without a doubt, all will be the better for it.

It is unfortunate, when Mma Ramotswe's newest client is the big-shot owner of the ailing Kalahari Swoopers, that one thing lady detectives know very little about is football. And when the glamorous Violet Sephotho sets her sights on Mma Makutsi's unsuspecting fiancé, it becomes exasperatingly clear that some men do not know how to recognise a ruthless Jezebel even when she is bouncing up and down on the best bed in the Double Comfort Furniture Shop.

Story
Precious Ramotswe, traditionally-built proprietor of Botswana's No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, contemplates the two sorts of problems that we all face in life: the major ones (such as drought), about which very little can be done, and the other sort which people make for themselves through human weakness and an inability to resist temptation. Like the inability to resist cake, for instance.

Gentle and Moorish
- By linda clark on 23-04-2021
Publisher's Summary
The delightful 17th installment of the ever-popular, perennially best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series.
For years Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi - codirectors of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - have been helping people with the problems in their lives, but their partnership is tested by a curious case: a client who wants to rediscover the life she lost when she left Botswana 30 years ago.
Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi soon find that the quest for the truth takes them in very different directions. Each is convinced she is on the right track - but what if they are both wrong?
Meanwhile Mma Ramotswe must extract Mr Polopetsi - part-time assistant detective - from a potential disaster with wide-reaching consequences; deal with a stray dog that Fanwell, the gentle mechanic, has brought into their lives; and cope with the agency's archenemy, Violet Sephotho.
Steeped in the heat of summer in Botswana and packed with intrigue, this heartfelt tale of friendship under pressure reveals how coming to terms with the past may be the only way to face the future.

One of the Best
"Precious and Grace" is one of the best books in the No1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. Mma Ramotsi still has a few things in her bags of detective tricks. Mma Makutsi does not let you down either. These are detectives with a difference, with astounding human smarts, and they never leave one wanting.

Another delightful trip to Botswana
Adjoa Andoh always makes the wonderful world of Mma Ramotswe come alive so convincingly. After 17 books the Botswana of Alexander McCall Smith offers a glorious, if fictitious, refuge from the stress and disappointments of life in cold grey Britain and the intolerance of Brexit. If only Mma Ramotswe could replace Theresa May our problems would soon be solved!

Old friends Precious and Grace are back to do not a great deal but allow you time to be transported to the heat and leisurely pace of life in Botswana. As with all the Ladies Detective Agency episodes there are some deep thoughts disguised as chatter over tea and a slice of Mme Potakwani's fruitcake. Adjoa Andoh narration was excellent.
