Would not have continued reading if it was not for the narrators

I really did not enjoy this book. The writing did not feel fleshed out enough and everything felt forced, plot, characters, relationships etc...

The dialogue between characters was also very basic.

Overall story was interesting but was too similar to the hunger games to make it feel original. I think the target audience is VERY young adults as opposed to a YA or NA novel.

Had some promising moments but overall I would not have continued with this novel if it wasn't for the narration.

I will not survive the wait until book two

Oh Lauren Roberts, what have you done to me 🥺🥺😭 How did you write such powerful, political, empowering work, that reminds me (all women) of our power, despite being Ordinary. This is one for the reread shelf. I cannot wait to see how this all unfolds.

Um... hunger games much?

If you're a fan of blatant rip-offs, then this is the book for you.
I found it incredibly hard to enjoy once it occurred to me that this is a poorly-executed reimagining of the Hunger Games.
The plot is exactly the same, story is exactly the same (with the only variance being the presence of supernatural powers) and very little original content remains.
The narration was the only thing I liked.

Cringey, Poorly Written & Frustrating

Honestly…. I wanted to like this book but it really didn’t do it for me. I was swayed by booktok but it’s definitely VERY young adult. The writing was very average & quite basic. I cringed and rolled my eyes A LOT. I nearly DNF’d it but I’d heard about a plot twist and the ending being good - spoiler, it wasn’t. I think it’s a really average book. It was frustrating!

Writing wise - The amount of times they talk about their eyes meeting, their gazes crashing into each other … the crushing blue eyes, the cloudy / stormy eyes 🤦‍♀️ it was soooo repetitive. We get it- she has “forget me not blue eyes” (so cliche) and he has a “stormy Grey gaze”.

Other phrases were super overused like “the words came tumbling from my mouth before I could stop them” or just the characters being surprised by words that come out of their mouth … like you control that whaaat? 😂 Also SPOILER the main character brings up her dads death A LOT but it’s done in a very unnecessary over explaining way.

The dialogues are super cringy and poorly written, between literally alll the characters. Also, the powers… the fact that there just so happens to be a power that “records and broadcasts what they’re seeing” literally made me laugh with disbelief - that’s such a specific random power that has just been made up for the trials ?! Which is so odd. I don’t think it made sense personally, it was lazy writing where she had to cover a plot hole of the audience not being able to see the trials.

The concept of the story was kind of cool with the plague and the powers and hierarchy , but then it very quickly turned into a VERYYYY SIMILIAR story to throne of glass. I’m talking - girl who can fight / is tough forced to compete in the kings trials (competition), she has a room in the castle, she trains with & gets to know the others competing, she befriends the prince & has a romantic connection with him, the Dorian / Cahol love triangle is soooo similar to the Kai/Kit one except even weirder because they’re brothers ?!?, there’s an evil king who the main character has a vendetta against and wants to kill, there’s a girl called Blair (so similar to Kaltain)… and it honestly goes on.

I also didn’t really get why Kit was into / pursued Paedyn when Kai met her at the start and had a connection with her?! Kit even says to his brother “you can’t stop thinking about that girl that saved you” and knew he liked her so I found it so weird that HE was then into her ?! And even weirder when he watched the first trial back and saw how intense their connection was that he still didn’t back off. It also wasn’t really addressed like the brothers never really discussed it?!

Plot wise I felt like the ending was so bad! SPOILER- she thinks the king killed her dad the whole time and has strong memories of seeing him do it… TO THE POINT THAT SHE CAN’T EVEN LOOK AT KIT BECAUSE HE LOOKS SO MUCH LIKE HIS DAD (the king), and then apparently she’s been remembering wrong the whole time and it was really Kai who did it
and looks nothing like the king (opposite hair and eyes)? I know in trauma you can have distorted memories but that made no sense. The king was even the one who suggested it to her and then she has a “sudden awakening”. It was so weird and made no sense!

So overall it was a 1/5 for me and I wish I hadn’t read it or just DNFed.

Great book 10/10 recommend it.

Looking for romantic action and lots of lies & betrayals? This is the book for ya. There were lots of fighting scenes which always kept me entertained, I love how the main character can fight for herself but also doesn't belittle the man role who helps her but also can stand on his own two feet. Many books or movies aremaking the male character sloppy and follow along behind the girl while she fights every thing and saves the day BORING! In this book, the two main characters fight side by side as equals before she um... Well kills his dad but that makes a good cliffhanger! Talking about cliffhangers- Can the 2nd pls come out sooner I read this one too fast and now I can't listen to anything because I am hooked on this book!!! WE NEED THE NEXT ONE NOW NOT IN 4 YEARS!!!!! 🫠

Easy to follow and great performances

Can’t wait for the next book! However saying that it was alittle predictable in small ways. I’m also very picky when it comes to listening and narration but these performances are easy to listen too and made the whole experience enjoyable. Overall amazing job and can’t wait to listen to the next one.!
