About this listen
Winner of the CWA Dagger in the Library Award, 2004.
Alexander McCall Smith, best-selling author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, has turned his hand to humour. The delightful result is a creation of comic genius. For in the unnaturally tall form of Professor Doctor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld, we are invited to meet a memorable character whose sublime insouciance is a blend of the cultivated pomposity of Frasier Crane and of Inspecteur Clouseau's hapless gaucherie.
Von Igelfeld inhabits the rarefied world of the Institute of Romance Philology at Regensburg, a world he shares with his equally tall and equally ridiculous colleagues, Professors Florianus Prinzel and Detlev Amadeus Unterholzer. Their unlikely adventures are described in three deliciously funny instalments: Portuguese Irregular Verbs, The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs, and At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances.

Hilarious
I could listen to this over and over again without diminishing joy. Hugh Laurie is amazing, he is perfect for the role; really does the story justice.

Laughed aloud!
Hugh Laurie is the perfect narrator for this book, therefore, I am pleased that I listened rather than read as he is much funnier than my inner voice!
From the start of Von Eagleveldt's adventures I was immediately captivated. His two friends (plus one wife of same) only add to the madness.
I am now going to buy the next three books in this series. Mr Smith has a ready buyer for his next Von adventure/s.

Fabulous story read by the fabulous Hugh Laurie
The story is a fascinating insight into the perspectives of a German scholar and author of the book Portuguese irregular verbs.
While this sounds rather dull, it is actually a riveting tale. All the characters in the story are so vividly brought to life, it is easy to believe that Hugh Laurie wrote the story as well as narrating it for Audible.
I loved the story and the narration. 10/10!

Slightly tedious
This is for those who are fond of cosy background tales - a little farcically silly at times, with stereotypes bordering on caricatures.
