Publisher's Summary

Once in a lifetime

Three low-income families have been given a handsome retainer to join Geraldine Borden for a day at her cliffside estate. All the parents must do to collect the rest of their money is allow their children to test out the revolutionary playground equipment Geraldine has been working on for decades. But there’s a reason the structures in the bowels of her gothic castle have taken so long to develop—they were never meant to see the light of day.

When a band of dysfunctional children is suddenly thrust into a diabolical realm of violence, they must grow up instantly to have a chance at survival. Will they find a way to put their differences aside, or be swallowed up by the insidious architecture all around them?

"With Playground, Aron Beauregard transcends himself, delivering a genuinely chilling, uncomfortable novel that will make even the most jaded horror fan squirm. A harrowing, relentless read that left me breathless." (Brian Keene)

Really enjoyed it

When there is a character so despicable who isn't even the main villain, made me have to stop listening for a moment to calm down. That is great writing.
This was a highly entertaining story. I enjoyed the writing style, the characters believable, the deaths were inventive and I was satisfied by the conclusion. I'm looking forward to see what twisted tale Mr. Beauregard comes up with next!

A horrific and tragic tale

This story is what you'd get if you forced children through a series of SAW traps, with all of the tragedy with how you'd expect that to play out.

While the plot is fairly minimal, this story is more about how the characters interact with the premise they are forced into, with the children reacting to the situation and each other, the parents forced to watch on and try to convince their captures into letting them go, and the antagonists watching each scene with glee.

The children get enough development for you to really care about them as they go from horror to horror, and you root for them to try and make it through each one.

The writing is great too. Everything, even the things you don't want, is described in such detail that you feel like you're in the room with the characters. The character's actions also feel consistent with how they're depicted too. The ending also feels appropriate for how the story led up to it.

The reader is also excellent, giving each character a unique voice to make you connect with them even more. Their narration felt like someone holding my hand to help me through the experience.

Horror fans looking for something more grotesque/shocking/horrific should absolutely check this book out.

Aron Beauregard is definitely my latest favourite "sick puppy author".

Note to readers: this is not a book for sensitive wee petals. This is extreme Gore, horror fiction. I discovered "The Slob" and the sequel, "Son of a slob" written buy this author, after which I had to find more of his work. This book was quite a bit milder, if you can believe it, than "the slob", but I found I really enjoyed it. The narration was brilliant. Coincidentally, the same narrator as for the other two books I have mentioned. I did like that not only did this tail have the expected extreme violence and shock factor, but it also had a tail of redemption for a major character and that made it for me.

Another Gem

What I love so much about Aron's works is that they combine the gruesome and depraved with genuinely great writing skills, engaging characters and the ability to tell interesting stories. This was a great listen with excellent narration.

The reason you read AB Books

Playground is a standout in the Splatterpunk genre. AB is an excellent writer that caters to fans of extreme literature. These books are not for the uninitiated. They are not ‘vanilla’ horror. However if you are a fan of the extreme genre then this is a very good example with great narration also.

A grotesque horror

As an intense horror lover stemming from movies to graphic novels this book truly is horrific in the best kind of way
From the disturbingly thorough descriptions to the writings of the characters and the voice who reads the story to you . You become encapsulated in the tale that gives Stephen king a run for his money . A playground you’d think we’re saw traps for the worst of humanity being forced upon mostly innocent youth and a henchman who’s trauma bond to his owner/mother who breaks free from the brainwashing it’s truly a story only for those with a strong stomach and not new to the horror world
I look forward to listening to more from this writer and hope for a sequel to this one covering the survivors and what happens to the now abandoned hell house
