Außerhalb der Ferienzeit ist es ruhig auf dem Campingplatz am Oberrieder Weiher. Deshalb ist der Betreiber heilfroh, dass wenigstens dieser seltsame Schriftsteller eine der Trekkinghütten bezogen hat. An einem Roman soll er schreiben, aber man sieht ihn immer nur um das alte Kieswerk herumstreifen - bis er eines Nachts verschwindet.
Als kurz darauf eine verkohlte Leiche in einem ausgebrannten Pferdestall gefunden wird, hat Kommissar Hansen einen schrecklichen Verdacht, und schon bald stößt er auf ein tödliches Geheimnis, das sich um das stillgelegte Kieswerk rankt.
