Publisher's Summary

Constable Paul Hirschhausen runs a one-cop station in the dry farming country south of the Flinders Ranges. He’s still new in town but the community work - welfare checks and working bees - is starting to pay off. Now Christmas is here and, apart from a grass fire, two boys stealing a ute and Brenda Flann entering the front bar of the pub without exiting her car, Hirsch’s life has been peaceful. Until he’s called to a strange, vicious incident in Kitchener Street. And Sydney police ask him to look in on a family living outside town on a forgotten back road…. Suddenly, it doesn’t look like a season of goodwill at all.

Good Story, well narrated

Good storyline, I didn't guess the ending which is always a plus. Narrative was great and not over dramatic. Thoroughly enjoyable story and I am happy to recommend it.

Small town secrets.

Found the initial drawl of the narrator a little irritatingly slow to start with, but once the story started to unfold the narration picked up pace. one the whole enjoyed the story.

Better than the First!

It might have been the narrator, but I think the story was better as well. A good whodunit! Lots of twists and turns. Some sad bits and happy bits all coming together to keep the reader listening. Love Aussie books and Aussie authors. I was never a fan of crime and cop stories but Garry Disher has reeled me in.

10/10

Fabulous story and narration was spot on. I listened to Book 1 and struggled to finish it- the narrator of book 1 absolutely butchered the characters- this book is worth a listen even as a stand-alone story, great pace, character development and tension maintained throughout. I finished it in 2 sittings!

OK story, great narration

Bought this on impulse as the daily deal and not having read others. The writing is good, the plot less so. Guessed the ending a long way back. It is obvious too that the author likes some of the characters he has created and really, really dislikes others - not sure it helps the narrative.

BRILLIANT

Binged this wonderful book Knowing the mid north made it even more compelling. From the first chapter to the last the plot was a blend of rural life reality and gritty crime. wonderfully narrated. PEACE highly recommend.
