About this listen
It's almost Christmas, and Emery Hazard finds himself face to face with his own personal nightmare: going on a double date with his partner - and boyhood crush - John-Henry Somerset. Hazard brings his boyfriend; Somers brings his estranged wife. Things aren't going to end well.
When a strange call interrupts dinner, however, Hazard and his partner become witnesses to a shooting. The victims: Somers' father and the daughter of a high school friend. The crime is inexplicable. There is no apparent motive, no connection between the victims, and no explanation for how the shooter reached his targets.
Determined to get answers, Hazard and Somers move forward with their investigation in spite of mounting pressure to stop. Their search for the truth draws them into a dark web of conspiracy and into an even darker tangle of twisted love and illicit desire. And as the two men come face to face with the passions and madness behind the crime, they must confront their own feelings for each other - and the hard truths that neither man is ready to accept.
©2018 Gregory Ashe (P)2018 TantorThis murder-mystery was absolutely absorbing as Somers wrestles with complicated feelings about his own parents and his father’s shooting while handling the grief of parents who have lost their young wayward daughter. Small mid-west town tensions keep the atmosphere claustrophobic and febrile as everyone whispers each other’s secrets and constantly passes judgement.
Look, I love this slow-burn series but it’s a constant exercise in frustration. Hazard and Somers have so many secrets and feelings for each other which simmer near the surface but hardly ever come out. Two things in this series make me scratch my head: the constant disrespect the public show the police and the unprofessional decisions the police make, I suppose they go hand-in-hand. I can’t work out if it’s an midwestern American thing or just part of this series.
US voice actor Tristan James has really grown on me throughout this series and he does excellent emotional work in this particular audio (the first three books are currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue).
Families ignite in this excellent murder-mystery!
