They run afoul of Stringer Jack's band of horse thieves as they attempt to start a horse ranch on the Yellowstone River, hoping to sell mounts to Fort Keogh's cavalry. Lloyd's novel contains historical facts as accurately portrayed as possible, while still a work of fiction full of interesting characters and the use of vintage firearms such as the old Sharps rifles, Henry rifles, and the colt pistol.
