About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Adrian Schiller.

In Paradise Lost Milton produced poem of epic scale, conjuring up a vast, awe-inspiring cosmos and ranging across huge tracts of space and time. And yet, in putting a charismatic Satan and naked Adam and Eve at the centre of this story, he also created an intensely human tragedy on the Fall of Man. Written when Milton was in his fifties - blind, bitterly disappointed by the Restoration and briefly in danger of execution - Paradise Lost's apparent ambivalence towards authority has led to intense debate about whether it manages to 'justify the ways of God to men', or exposes the cruelty of Christianity.

Even though the way this book was written is abit advanced i enjoyed reading it, the story was great and worth a re-read. The story as good as it is also brings greater light to questions we as humans babe seeked for the longest time. A very thought provoking book and should be one of many books teachers will read to their students in high schools around the world.

id rate this book with the same score i give The Illiad & The Odyssey, The Cthulu Mythos and The Divine Comedy....10/10

This was a splendid rendering of Milton's powerful and lengthy poem. Adrian Schiller intelligently conveyed the text's levels of meaning and the grand metaphor that that the religious theme of Paradise Lost suggests in the twenty-first century. His pauses and voice modulation enhanced my understanding of the work. Altogether, the narration was a pleasure to listen to.

Highly impressive performance - an Audible triumph

One of the books everyone should read at least once. The story of how the greatest of God’s angels became the devil himself and how the fall of man ensued. Andrew Schiller adds a whole other dimension. I wish he was reading Paradise Regained as well
